Block Scheduling: Stay or Go? Throughout schools there are either full seven periods in a school day or other schools have block scheduling. Block scheduling is four periods in a day which are ninety minute classes, and every day you have different classes. In schools that have seven periods in a day, the classes are only forty five to fifty minutes. Some schools think that block scheduling would be better in schools. While others think that they should keep the seven classes in a day. Every school should start having block schedules. In schools with seven periods in a day students spend less time in class, while the students that have block schedule spend more time in that class. According to Evans, William, Jan Tokarczyk, Sheri Race, and Alison McCray of Block Scheduling, in their article entitled “Block scheduling: An evaluation of outcomes and impact” in the 2002 edition of Clearing house, “We examined a number of student outcomes, including grades, honor roll and failure rates, the numbers of students successfully completing Advanced Placement courses, and achievement test scores.” With them checking the scores of the students they figured out that the honor roll increased by nine percent (from 22 percent to 31 percent). Students that were receiving a “D” or an “F” on their final grades decreased by seven percent (from 29 percent to 22 percent). Also there was a decrease in student’s failure rate, from eight percent to five percent. Altogether the test scores for student went up and the failures went down. Block scheduling should be used in schools all around the world. There are many reasons why schools should start getting block scheduling. For example, students spent more time in class and got to do less homework after school. Though block scheduling can be a good thing it can also be a bad thing. Schools with the traditional schedule save more money than schools with block scheduling.
