On the night of August 12-13, 1961, Berlin began to experience some awful tragedies. They became separated by a wall because of financial reasons.The wall separated the East from the West Berlin. There was many reasonings behind this. America was involved in this also. 1961 and years before was a very important time in history for Berlin and the U.S. The president(JFK) went to a meeting on contingency plans in the event of a blockade of Berlin took place. The president came to be concerned about the situation on how the United Kingdom, France, and West Germany, as well as the U.S., and how they would respond the all of the pressure that would end up coming from this situation. In June 1961, President JFK traveled to Vienna Austria for a meeting with the soviet leader Nikata Khrushchev. Tunneling was hard work and took months to complete. Among those who partook in building the tunnels were professional gangs, students and common work folk. The tunnels had to be built in deep secrecy so that the German soldiers couldn’t find them. (www.ushistory.com) About 5,000 East Germans managed to escape across the Berlin Wall to the west. Thousands of East Germans were captured during the attempts. There was also 191 East Germans that were killed during the attempt. However, during the first days many people could escape through the border but day by day it became more dangerous. At the beginning, people tried climbing over the wall, they jumped out of the houses which were in the border area or tunnels were built to escape. During the first several days many people lost their life attempting to escape. Some were luckier than others, and some did not even have a chance.
