Blog Post #3: Sexual Abuse Child abuse can come in many ways; one of the ways being sexual. The definition of sexual child abuse or child molestation is a form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent uses a child for sexual stimulation. According to RAINN, “A perpetrator does not have to be an adult to harm a child” (RAINN). Many parents overlook the fact that abusers can be an older sibling or playmate, which can lead to the child being abused for a longer period of time. Caregivers need to remember that sexual abuse can come from anyone because it is involving using a child for their sexual enthusiastic, which does not require the abuser to be an adult. There can be physical and behavioral signs; it is important to notice all the signs for your child. RAINN states that some of the reasons could include, “frequent urinary or yeast infections, difficulty walking or sitting, or pain, itching, or burning in the genital area for physical signs. Behavioral signs include: changes in hygiene, expresses suicidal thoughts, nightmares, bedwetting, self-harms, shrinks away, or seems threatened by physical contact” (RAINN). Somethings that are considered ‘backtracking’ is not the child’s fault, which means that they should not be punished for such conducts. Most children won’t talk about what happened to them because the offender has coerced them to not say anything about the sexual abuse. Children need to be taught from an early age that no one should ever touch them or make them feel uncomfortable, but if it happens to occur, they should always come forward to their parents. Knowing the signs to child abuse can help parents assure it never happens to their child, and if it does, that their child knows what to do or
