The author uses multiple ways to develop characters in the book, Blue Skin of The Sea. For example, the character, Tutu Max, was developed in these ways. First of all, one way that a character is developed is by what they do. Chapter two of the book shows this by stating, “Tutu Max gave Uncle Raz a shove… into the water.” This shows that Tutu Max is a bully.
Blue Skin of the Sea takes place on The Big Island of Hawaii during 1953-1966. The story focuses on a boy named Sonny Mendoza who lost his mother when he was born. His father is always gone because of his job being a fisherman. Sonny stays with his Aunty Pearl and his cousin Keo which he is somewhat of a bully. The stories in this book show Sonny grow up as he has to face several different challenges.

Even though the title “Good People” is plural word the author used it as a description of a single person such as “he was desperate to be good people”(547). , and “she was good people”(548). It could be a clue that Sheri is pregnant woman that has another soul inside her which is the unborn baby that is union between Lane and Sheri The most significant difference between the stories is that in “Black Man and White Woman In Dark Green Rowboat” the author does not reveal the names of the characters. But in “Hills Like White Elephants” and “Good People” both of the authors named the characters.
After reading Ship Breaker, the author explores the characters, Nailer, Sloth, Pima, and Nailer’s father Richard Lopez and their loyalties and how they changed over time towards one another. Nailer is a teenage boy who works on a light crew and squirming through the smallest places of old ships to collect scrap metals. Sloth is also a teenage girl who also known to be a crew girl who works with Nailer and both characters don’t seem to get along with one another. Pima is Nailer’s best friend and sort of manager on Nailer’s light crew. Nailer’s father Richard Lopez is a person who’s an alcoholic and gets high every day.
Each character is able to contribute to the story in many different ways, emotionally and physically. Even the quietest characters in the book, such as Theresa Cruz build up the story. First of all, on page one hundred and six, Sonny thinks, “To him, and to Aunty Pearl, my mother was Crissy with her hand on Dad’s chest, not just an old photograph in a picture album.” Sonny is saying how his mother is more than just a photographic memory. She is a memory that is still alive to her dad.
