After reading Ship Breaker, the author explores the characters, Nailer, Sloth, Pima, and Nailer’s father Richard Lopez and their loyalties and how they changed over time towards one another. Nailer is a teenage boy who works on a light crew and squirming through the smallest places of old ships to collect scrap metals. Sloth is also a teenage girl who also known to be a crew girl who works with Nailer and both characters don’t seem to get along with one another. Pima is Nailer’s best friend and sort of manager on Nailer’s light crew. Nailer’s father Richard Lopez is a person who’s an alcoholic and gets high every day. In the novel it states that, “You’ll drown anyway. Sloth’s not going to save you (p.30).” This statement was Nailer’s thoughts as he was in the oil. This confirms that Nailer’s trust and loyalty towards Sloth has changed, because Sloth wouldn’t save him when he was drowning in the oil. Not only Nailer’s loyalties changed over time, but it could’ve token his life when he was drowning in the oil. In addition, life is more important than loyal. Furthermore, even best friends towards one another change their loyalties as their relationship goes on. In the novel Nailer and his best friend Pima has been friends for a long time, but their relationship to one another has changed. In the novel it states that, “Pima shook her head. “No. I’m not doing it”… “I’m not leaving my mom (p.177).” As a result, Nailer’s best friend, Pima, their loyalties towards each other has change.
