Topic Sentence #1: When the freedom to live their lives how they want to is forcefully changed, people are motivated to resist in an attempt to earn back their old ways of living. Claim #1: Resistance is necessary towards the beginning of the novel because Annie is deprived of how she wants to live her life. Support #1, 1: At the beginning of the book, Annie is placed in an uncomfortable situation because the invaders assemble themselves at Mayor Orden’s home and treat it as if it is their own home. This kind of behavior coming from the invaders is horrible because it goes against how Annie wants to live her life. Claim #2: Molly Morden is left with no other options but to resist because the invaders treat her husband malevolently. Support #2, 1: After the event in which Captain Bentick is killed by Alexander Morden, Colonel Lanser and Mayor Orden are conversing about the purpose of punishment and what punishment will do. In the midst of their conversation, Colonel Lanser reveals to Mayor Orden, “You know as well as I that punishment is largely for the purpose of deterring the potential criminal. Thus, since punishment is for others than the punished, it must be publicized. It must even be dramatized” (Steinbeck 47). Support #2, 2: Later on in the conversation between Colonel Lanser and Mayor Orden, Colonel Lanser reaches the following conclusion: “The coal miner must be shot publicly, because the theory is that others will then restrain themselves from killing our men” (Steinbeck 49). Support #2, 3: In the later part of the novel, Tonder shows up at Molly Morden’s home in which he expresses feelings that he has for her. The manner in which Molly talks about her husband to Tonder causes him to realize that Molly’s husband was the one that he killed. Claim #3: The Trump Administration recently made a justifiable decision to engage in resistance against Syria because the Syrian government malevolently abused its power directly on its own citizens. Support #3, 1: The United States responded to the Syrian government killing dozens of their own citizens with a chemical weapons attack by launching a military strike on a Syrian government air base (Starr and Diamond). Support #3, 2: As a part of the retaliation, President Donald Trump ordered for the US warships to launch 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the air base where the warplanes originally delivered the chemical attacks on Syrian citizens (Starr and Diamond). Support #3, 3: Paradoxically, not only did Syria go against its own ban on chemical weapons, but it also violated its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention which outlawed the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons (Starr and Diamond). Analysis #3: The Trump Administration is worthy to be praised for their actions because they took a brave action by resisting against the Syrian government. The United States implemented resistance by launching missiles directly on the Syrian air base in an attempt to correct Syria’s murderous behavior.
