When Brent Bishop killed Lea Zamora in a car crash, many factors were at play and influenced Brent, besides just his blood alcohol level. Car crashes are a leading cause of death for teenagers. (Brochure). Brent’s gender, age, and social class may have had an important factor in this tragic car accident. In the short passage by Kierstin Koppel titled “Humanizing Morticians,” she uses a lot of figurative language to give a mortician a wonderful personality. Koppel’s first sentence even depicts a very vivid scene, “The corpse lies bare under a white sheet waiting to be dissected and reconstructed through a series of surgical procedures” (Koppel). This sentence does not only describe an interesting scene, but it also grabs the reader’s attention by explaining what the passage is going to be about. Later, Koppel begins to explain her own point of view when it comes to being a mortician.
Set amongst the desolate Icelandic landscape, Hannah Kent explores the life of a convicted murderer, Agnes Magnúsdóttir in her novel, Burial Rites. By allowing Agnes to have a voice, Kent encourages to see that her death is not only a by-product of Agnes choices, but also due to the judgement of the society that she lived in. This society in which powerful men with status are the rule for life and death, both unfair and prejudiced. Thus, through 'Burial Rites ' Kent seeks to explore how Agnes 's death sentence cannot be blamed purely on her actions, but also on the unforgiving society that punishes those who are disadvantaged. Kent uses a range of techniques to explore that nothing can be blamed purely on fate.

Hatred was buried down deep between the Hatfields and the McCoys. Fanny McCoy guided herself through the twisted branches of family, love, and hatred. “The Coffin Quilt” by Ann Rinaldi told the story of the feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys, at least how Fanny McCoy lived it. But was she a trustworthy source of information for what happened? Her young age alone could cause some discrepancies with the telling of the arduous feud.
Embalming the elderly can be straight foward or very complicated depending on the medical conditions and severity of these conditions the decedent suffered from throughout life. Medications can pose their own problems in the prep room and physical conditions such as Kyphosis or arthritic conditions cause create a problem in the dressing room. I would begin by cleaning and disinfecting the decedent, first by using a topical disinfectant spray then by using a germicidal soap. I would then begin setting features starting with the closure of the mouth, I would use a needle injector if the decedent still had natural teeth and no signs of bone density loss, if the decedent has no natural teeth or displays signs of bone density loss then I would recommend use of mandibular or muscular suture to avoid damaging the mandable or maxillae. I would then use cotton or a mouth former and mortuary putty to begin smoothing any sunken areas in the face.

The next time this topic came up with a patient was during a visit on October 23rd. I asked her how she selected this form of burial, she hesitated at first and then said that her decision was economically based. She then continued on by listing the benefits of being cremated besides saving money, such as “I wount have bugs crawling all in me and I will always be with my family.” It seemed like she was justifying her decision with herself, so that she could be at peace.
Kayla Burnett Professor Maharaj October 7, 2014 Analysis Renowned journalist, Jessica Mitford, in her essay, “Behind the Formaldehyde Curtain”, describes in great detail the practices of embalming and the various procedures the body goes through after death in America. Mitford’s purpose for writing this essay is to explore what exactly happens behind the scenes in a funeral home, which is kept secret in our society. In her essay, Mitford clearly opposes the process of embalming, a regular practice at funeral homes in America, that can happen without any consent of the dead person’s family. Throughout the essay, Mitford voices her opposition toward the process of embalming, arguing the legality of the process of embalming, and the way American
Field Trip Assignment When considering the entities involved with death and dying, the first place that came to my mind was the funeral home. When someone in your life passes away, you likely find yourself at the funeral home or at least becoming aware of funeral arrangements soon after the death. This is the route I went with and decided to visit Reigle Funeral Home for my field trip assignment. The Reigle location that I traveled to was on Pierson Road in Flushing, Michigan.
Social norms can vary from culture to culture, but the definition remains the same, which is the rules and regulations that a group of people live by or the standards of behavior of a group of people. The social norms created are generally informal rules based on an idea of how people should, should not, may, may not, must, must not act in public situations. This puts pressure on some people to conform to these behaviors, however, some social norms have a grey area where one has a freedom of choice on whether to conform or not. This can be observed in funeral services because there is a general consensus to wear black as a sign of mourning, but nowadays there is more leeway on what you can wear such as the deceased’s favorite color while still
Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities Assisted living facilities are one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. Unfortunately, assisted living facilities have a history of being problematic. Specific cases from the movie Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities indicates that assisted living facilities are often under staffed, poorly trained, and often admit elderly patients who are not qualified candidates for their facilities (Byker and Thompson, 2013). When taking this in to account, it is important to consider why families may admit their loved ones in to assisted living facilities.
