The book The Boys of Winter by Wayne Coffey tells a story about the 1980’s Olympic semi-finals between the U.S.A hockey team and the Russian hockey team. Since the 1960’s team Russia has dominated Olympic hockey. They set an example of how to play the game like, only taking wrist shots, because why risk breaking your stick or getting a splinter with a slap shot. The Russians had no doubt that they would win. But coach Brooks, the coach of the Americans had the game all planned out with trick plays and players playing different positions to mess with the Russians.
The 1996 novel, Brian’s Winter is a fictional nature survival story that focuses on Brian, the protagonist. Brian’s Winter is the alternate ending to Hatchet, the first book in which Brian is in a plane crash, and is rescued after having spent just over forty-five days alone in the Canadian wilderness. In Brian's Winter, the author Gary Paulsen experiments with what would have happened if Brian had been left in the Canadian wilderness during winter. The separation starts with Brian noticing cold weather on a day of fall hunting. Brian prepares himself for winter performing all of the necessary survival tasks.
"Winter Saturday" poet Earle Birney uses descriptive metaphors to compare farmers to caterpillars, as they leave their homes in the cold winter season. Through these comparisons the author makes great effort to show the similarities between humans and nature. The alliteration "Furred from the farmhouse" (line 1) as well as the simile “Like caterpillars from wood" (line 2) expresses resemblance on how humans, insects, and other species of nature leave hibernation into the cold.
“He was immense,” “Full of winter death.” In the book Dogsong by Gary Paulsen the main character Russel Susskit encountered many difficult situations which he was able to overcome with his bravery. He is a 13 year old boy who goes on a long trip in north america during the mid 1980’s, to find his true self with a team of sled dogs. Russel is a strong, courageous, and brave boy who is able to overcome any obstacle.
But when the winter wind came sweeping up from Antarctica with ice on its tongue, licking and smoothing his cheeks into cold flat pebbles, he put on one of his father's thick coats that came down to his ankles”. The description in this book is so powerful that you can feel what's happening in the story.
In the survival novel “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen, A character, Brian had to overcome a huge problem which delivered character development in the three instances; plane crash, forest and mainly his personal life. Brian was a thirteen year old boy whose parents got divorced. Brian recently had been flying on a plane for his first time to see his father. He was flying from Hampton, New York to the north woods of Canada where his dad moved to as a result of the divorce. Brian had been told by the judge, he has to stay with his mother during the school days and is allowed to stay with his father during the summer due to the law.
The book I choice to read was, “Brian’s Winter”, by Gary Paulsen. This book is about Brian after the private plane he was flying in crashes in to the rugged forests of Canada. Brian went through many struggles while trying the best he could to survive in the harsh environment. Some of the biggest events in this story include when he is attacked by a bear, during the major storms and some of his questionable encounters with the wolves. If I were telling a friend about the entire story in two minutes I would say, Brian’s parents were divorced leading him to visit his father for the first time in a long time.
I explains about Brian surviving a plane crash and having to survive alone in the woods by himself. He forgets he has a hatchet his mother gave to him before he left. As the students read on, the author writes the difficulties he has while surviving. Brian changes over time since he is a city
Throughout the short story “Snow” by Julia Alvarez, the literary devices of imagery and diction contribute to the overall theme that immigrating into a new environment can be a fearful experience. In paragraph three, Yolanda explains that while at her new school, they would perform air raid drills, leaving her imagination to picture the worst-case scenarios she learned about. We see this when she says that she would, “imagine our hair falling out, the bones in our arms going soft.” This shows that procedures and lessons Yolanda never had to learn or do before immigrating to the U.S. have a significant impact on the way she views everyday life, from living in an innocent world to one that is out to hurt her.
In Brian 's Winter it shows how he had to adapt to the winter to be able to survive and make it. It talks about how winter hit him out of know where and how he was being careless with the hunting supplies he had. Brian is the main character in the book and the book is told from his point of view so you could feel, experience what he actually had to go threw. Brian he is only a teenager is all alone in the woods after a plane crash in the book hatchet and has to learn how to adapt to the woods to survive. Brian has to learn how to hunt, make shelter, make a fire, and several other things he is not used to doing.
The autobiographical novel Winterdance, written by Gary Paulsen, is based on the author’s experiences in both training for and running in the Iditarod dog sled race. Held in Alaska, the race conditions are so extreme it is cold enough for your eyeballs to potentially freeze. An important setting in the novel is the Iditarod dog sled race as throughout the novel, it helps me understand a key character - Gary Paulsen. He allows me to explore the idea of how experiences can change your understanding on life and the significance of loyalty. Gary Paulsen beautifully illustrates the extraordinary setting of the Iditarod dog sled in the novel; Winterdance, to portray and help us understand his experiences.
Frost is a book written by Marianna Baer that tells the story of how a teen, Leena, is attending her last year of high school at Barcroft Academy. She shares a house with three other people: Abby, Liv, and Celeste. They live in Frost House which used to be the only boys' home until they renovated it into a girls' home. During their senior year, they went through a lot of trials and tribulations before they reached the end of their journey. At the beginning of the book, the writing was alright.
The narrator describes the Yukon Territory as 75-degrees below freezing and being a highly treacherous for anyone to travel alone (2). By introducing this hostile environment, London creates tension in the reader as they begin to question the man’s safety in the freezing cold temperatures, After the man falls into the river and starts to freeze to death, he builds a fire in order to survive. As the fire grows and the warmth spreads, the snow on a tree falls, knocking out his fire. Through struggles such as this one, suspense is created due to the severity of the danger the man faces and the risks involved in the
Relationships between two friends that have known each other for years is what always make a book interesting. In the book, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie and george have this type of relation. Lennie and George are two friends who have known each other for a long time and get along fairly well. Despite having some discussions due to Lennie simpleness, they love each other and dream of sharing a house with rabbits. They care a lot for each other as shown in the following quote.
The beautiful yet deadly Yukon winter is a dangerous place for a lonely traveler. Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” depicts such a beautiful yet dangerous place. In this story, a man must travel a long distance across the frozen tundra and risk freezing to death in the elements. However, this man is not familiar enough with his environment to understand the danger he faces. Throughout this short story, the author uses specific word choices, or diction, to create a somber, fatalistic, and irate mood.
