The 1996 novel, Brian’s Winter is a fictional nature survival story that focuses on Brian, the protagonist. Brian’s Winter is the alternate ending to Hatchet, the first book in which Brian is in a plane crash, and is rescued after having spent just over forty-five days alone in the Canadian wilderness. In Brian's Winter, the author Gary Paulsen experiments with what would have happened if Brian had been left in the Canadian wilderness during winter. The separation starts with Brian noticing cold weather on a day of fall hunting. Brian prepares himself for winter performing all of the necessary survival tasks.
“He was immense,” “Full of winter death.” In the book Dogsong by Gary Paulsen the main character Russel Susskit encountered many difficult situations which he was able to overcome with his bravery. He is a 13 year old boy who goes on a long trip in north america during the mid 1980’s, to find his true self with a team of sled dogs. Russel is a strong, courageous, and brave boy who is able to overcome any obstacle.
"Winter Saturday" poet Earle Birney uses descriptive metaphors to compare farmers to caterpillars, as they leave their homes in the cold winter season. Through these comparisons the author makes great effort to show the similarities between humans and nature. The alliteration "Furred from the farmhouse" (line 1) as well as the simile “Like caterpillars from wood" (line 2) expresses resemblance on how humans, insects, and other species of nature leave hibernation into the cold.
In the survival novel “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen, A character, Brian had to overcome a huge problem which delivered character development in the three instances; plane crash, forest and mainly his personal life. Brian was a thirteen year old boy whose parents got divorced. Brian recently had been flying on a plane for his first time to see his father. He was flying from Hampton, New York to the north woods of Canada where his dad moved to as a result of the divorce. Brian had been told by the judge, he has to stay with his mother during the school days and is allowed to stay with his father during the summer due to the law.

It talks about how winter hit him out of know where and how he was being careless with the hunting supplies he had. Brian is the main character in the book and the book is told from his point of view so you could feel, experience what he actually had to go threw. Brian he is only a teenager is all alone in the woods after a plane crash in the book hatchet and has to learn how to adapt to the woods to survive. Brian has to learn how to hunt, make shelter, make a fire, and several other things he is not used to doing.
The autobiographical novel Winterdance, written by Gary Paulsen, is based on the author’s experiences in both training for and running in the Iditarod dog sled race. Held in Alaska, the race conditions are so extreme it is cold enough for your eyeballs to potentially freeze. The beautiful yet deadly Yukon winter is a dangerous place for a lonely traveler. Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” depicts such a beautiful yet dangerous place. In this story, a man must travel a long distance across the frozen tundra and risk freezing to death in the elements. However, this man is not familiar enough with his environment to understand the danger he faces. Throughout this short story, the author uses specific word choices, or diction, to create a somber, fatalistic, and irate mood.
The book I choice to read was, “Brian’s Winter”, by Gary Paulsen. This book is about Brian after the private plane he was flying in crashes in to the rugged forests of Canada. Brian went through many struggles while trying the best he could to survive in the harsh environment. Some of the biggest events in this story include when he is attacked by a bear, during the major storms and some of his questionable encounters with the wolves. If I were telling a friend about the entire story in two minutes I would say, Brian’s parents were divorced leading him to visit his father for the first time in a long time.
