Like Water for Chocolate: Gertrudis as a Mirror. Books have the power to spark imagination to new heights. We think of magical lands and unrealistic places and people, but when do you ever stop reading for a moment and realize that you see yourself in the book? The importance of mirrors in books is very understated. Being able to relate to people that live completely different lives than you is amazing. In the book, Like Water for Chocolate By, Laura Esquivel, Tita, a young girl born into a tradition as the youngest child must care for the mother until she passes away. She decides to release her sexual desires at a brothel. Later in the novel, she sends a letter to Tita explaining how she wants to move on and start somewhere new. Then after Tita has an affair with her fiance and gets pregnant, Gertrudis is there to support Tita with wise words. Examining Gertrudis’s character, I saw character traits that resemble me: someone who is wise and supportive towards others. We both care for others, and giving advice is our way of helping others. Gertrudis is a wise and supportive character because she is there for her younger sister and decides to help Tita no matter the situation. When Tita and Gertrudis are conversing about how Tita is pregnant, Gertrudis gives Tita some very helpful advice. Tita is upset because of her current situation. She got engaged to Dr. John Brown and had an affair before their wedding. Tita found out she was pregnant. In the novel Gertrudis says, “Look, Tita, the simple truth is that the truth does not exist; it all depends on a person’s point of view” (1990). There is a lot to decipher in this quote.
