While reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel, one of the things I learned about was the jews living conditions. I read about Elie living them with many other jews and it stuck out to me because how could a person live like that and stay alive? Every jew that was caught was sent to a concentration camp and had a total different way of lifestyle when being held there. Another thing that stuck out while reading the book was the SS officers. The SS officers are Hitler's protective unit.
The book “Night” was written in 1960 by Elie Wiesel. This book took place mainly in Auschwitz and Buchenwald, during the years of 1944- 1945. The book “Night” is a memoir mainly about Eliezer and his father being imprisoned by the German Nazis and sent to several concentration camps. So that, Eliezer's faith is tested in many different ways with the severe horrors of The Holocaust.
The Holocaust was a very traumatic event for everyone who experienced it and those who came after, and it gave many people experience, trauma, and disorders that they should never have had. Those of us who did not personally experience the pain will never know what those Jews went through in those camps, but Maus and Night share the experiences and horrors that millions of Jews had to live through. How did the execrable setting, the concentration camps, alter those involved? Good people were manipulated and changed into performing heinous acts. “Night,” is written from the perspective of Eliezer, as he navigated through the survival of the Holocaust, with his father. Eli became aware that people who neglected their morals thrived, this revelation troubled him deeply. The inhumane atrocities that took place during the Holocaust resulted in corrupt mindsets among those involved: the German soldiers, the Jews and Eliezer himself.
But when one looks back at the times of the Holocaust, everything going on today seems to minuscule to even try to compare. One of the many horrible things that Wiesel had to deal with was the hardships of marching. Yeah one might look at the word marching and assume that maybe it wasn't that bad, but in reality it was horrible. When the term marching was stated in the book it was an understatement to what they were actually doing. What the march symbolized for jews was something so much worse.
Elie Wiesel is the author and speaker in ‘Night.’ In the story, Elie Wiesel is remembering what has occurred in the past which means he is not only telling the story, he is reliving it. He is in the story. Elie Wiesel has survived multiple concentration camps and interestingly enough passed away only recently on July 2, 2016. Elie Wiesel is also a Romanian-born American Jew.
Elie and his father attempted to keep each other awake to avoid the grip of death. As night fell, the SS ordered the Jews to get back into their ranks. They marched in the freezing cold while snow fell from the sky. After a while of marching and running, they arrived at Gleiwitz. The Jews were crammed into the barracks, with very little room for air.
These death marches seemed so hopeful to the prisoners because they thought this could be their one chance to escape this harsh reality. However to those of us that are looking from the outside in we notice that death marches were not for liberation from the camp but instead liberation from this reality, from this world. Although Elie and his father survived the death march the death toll continued to rise by the second, but who was counting at this point. As soon as Elie reached the end of this journey he realized that this was not a liberation trail because he ended up where he started. At a concentration camp.
