Females in the Holocaust
In the Holocaust, Hitler not only killed people,but made them work till their death in severe conditions. Hitler put people in “Work Camps” where they crushed rocks, built huts for other prisoners to stay in, and dug ditches for dead bodies. During the holocaust, Hitler created certain areas of concentration camps designed for female prisoners. The information given in the book “The Hiding Place” contains facts and research about Female prisoner work camps. This book tells about Corrie and Betsie Ten Boom and how they tried to be a “light” for God through this dark time of the Holocaust.

These sisters lived in Germany with their father who made and restored watches for a living. Their mother, who stayed at home with the girls, became ill and died one summer. Later in the book, Hitler comes in to power and they immediately start taking Jews away to concentration camps. During this time, the Ten Booms start taking in Jews and hiding them in a wall they built behind a closet. Every day, the Ten Booms and the Jews they were housing would go through the routine they had come up with in case someone rang the doorbell. When someone would come and ring the doorbell, the Jews had under one minute to be upstairs and in the hiding place before the Ten Booms would open the door to whoever was there. One day, the doorbell rang and the Jews went to the hiding place and the Ten Booms answered the door to find the Nazi police. The Teen Booms had been arrested for hiding Jews in their house. The Nazis searched and searched the house, but they never found the Jews.The Nazis left and the Jews lived, but the Ten Booms were separated and sent off to concentration camps and work camps. Casper Ten Boom, the father, was sent to a concentration camp, and Corrie and Betsie were sent to a females’ prison work camp. Women had horrible living conditions. According to the text, “The Jews "lived" on starvation rations. A daily ration was one piece of black bread, a small slab of margarine, and a small cup of something that was supposed to be soup. Every once in a while there was something floating in it – a drop of horse meat. That was all the nourishment one received for 24 hours.” (“Slave Labor”1).
They crammed as many people as they could on a wooden bunk with no mattress and splinters everywhere. Just like the female prisoners, Corrie and Betsie were beaten and had the same horrible experiments conducted on them. The two sisters worked alongside the other prisoners breaking up rocks to build the huts. They often stole food and medicine to share with the other women. Corrie and Betsie relied on each other and God to help them get through each horrible
