Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a non-fiction novel that takes place during World War II. It is an inspiring book that allows individuals to learn many life lessons about perseverance and never giving up no matter the situation. The purpose of Laura Hillenbrand writing Unbroken was to be the person telling all of those who would read this inspiring/factual novel about the conditions and different situations that the POW campers had to endure during World War II. She also was able to show an individual how a situation can make a person stronger even if he or she feels defeated on the inside through having hope. The book was written for the older/ mature people because of the harsh behavior that those in the book had to encounter as well as the harsh language that is used a few times. For example: “He told the guards to club any men who did not strike the chosen men with maximum force” (295). This book was so well written that is was interesting to read and easy to follow. As a reader, the context did not get confusing and never to over bearing to follow the different time periods of Louie Zamperini’s life. With the book being about the life of Louie, there were times when it became hard to read, not because of the writing itself, but rather because of the detail of the terrible things that happened. In Unbroken, the author was balanced while approaching this subject. She never downgraded on any specific individual, but rather told the story in a way that still allowed the readers to see what really happened. With the Bird being one of the harshest individuals, Laura was still able to tell the story without tearing his character up for what he had committed in the past. Louie Zamperini was an Olympic runner who became an Air Force airman once World War II started and was stranded for forty-seven days battling sharks, typhoons, and enemy gunfire in the Pacific Ocean after his plane crashed. Once he was captured by the Japanese, for two year he was beaten, starved, and humiliated by a guard named Mutsuhiro Watanabe, the Bird, at certain POW camps. There was also his life after he returned home where he encountered being haunted in his dreams by the Bird as well as having to make sense of his life after everything he had to encounter during the time of war.
