Heroes of Unbroken and To Kill a Mockingbird Heroes come in different shapes and sizes, from soldiers who survive harrowing ordeals to young girls who defy societal norms. Louie Zamperini and Scout Finch are heroes because they both show the same qualities as a hero; courage and perseverance. Louie Zamperini was an American soldier during WWII who survived on an inflatable raft at sea for 47 days. After that traumatic experience, he arrived on enemy land where Japanese soldiers held him at several camps for over 2 years where he was extremely mistreated. He survived and returned home safely after the war ended. He was the main protagonist in the book Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. Despite intense beatings, Zamperini refused to back down. Hillenbrand writes, "His beatings resumed, with intensified vigor. Louie stood his ground with rebellion boiling in him, praying the Americans would come," (Hillenbrand 191). This act of defiance shows Zamperini's bravery and determination, as he refuses to give in to his captor's demands. Zamperini's willingness and courage to fight for his survival against The Bird makes him a hero. Like Louie Zamperini, Scout Finch also displayed courage. In To Kill a Mockingbird, when a violent mob threatens her father, Scout shows unbelievable bravery and determination. As she recalls, "‘Don’t you remember me, Mr. Cunningham? I’m Jean Louise Finch. You brought us some hickory nuts one time, remember?’ I began to sense the futility one feels when unacknowledged by a chance acquaintance," (Lee 174). Scout confronts the mob leader, Mr. Cunningham, and reminds him of a time when he showed kindness to her family. This act of empathy and courage inspires the mob to disperse, averting a potentially deadly situation.
