The book I chose to read, “Night”, was named after Elie Wiesel’s darkest time period in his life. When Elie was young, he was enslaved by the Nazi’s. In the novel, Elie tells us how harsh conditions were for the Jews and what they had to experience. After the Holocaust, he was inspired to write about the concentration camps that he stayed at and what he experienced while he was in the death camp. I chose to read this book because I wanted to learn more about the Holocaust and what the Jewish people had to experience.
Eliezer, a Jewish teenager and the narrator of the book, lives in his hometown of Sighet. Eliezer studied the Torah and Kabbalah as a young child and learned soon that his life was in danger. In 1944, the Nazi’s took over Eliezer's …show more content…

During this time period, the Jewish people were taken out of their homes, some were even killed, and put in Concentration Camps by German Nazis. These camps forced Jews to work in very dangerous and unsanitary areas. German soldiers were harsh and brutal to these people and showed no respect for them. The living conditions for the Jews were horrid and due to these conditions, this led to a large percentage of decrease in the population. A quote that was significant to this book is, “in the beginning there was faith - which is childish; trust - which is vain; and illusion - which is dangerous.” I believe this quote goes along with the time period of the book very well, because if the Jews had faith they would make it, it could lead them to their deathbeds. Another quote that was important was ““One more stab to the heart, one more reason to hate. One less reason to live.” The reason this quote was important is because when the Jewish people would have the faith of something good happening, but it wouldn’t turn out the way they wanted it and sometimes they would feel like as all these things kept building up, dying would be easier than living. My favorite quote from “Night” is, “I shall always remember that smile. From what world did, it come from?” To me, this quote means, that the best “medicine” is a smile or trying your hardest to be
