One of the most well know labor, educational and human rights activists is Eleanor Roosevelt, who changed the United States and the world for the better. In She Was One of Us: Eleanor Roosevelt and the American Worker, the journey of this influential women is followed along with the contributions others around her made to help further her work. Through Brigid O’Farrell’s research and dedication the reader is able to invision each step Eleanor Roosevelt, with contributions from others, took to help change the country and the world.
She Was One of Us is a biography on Eleanor Roosevelt and her life and involvement in labor, education, civil and human rights reform. The book follows Eleanor’s path and growth in helping the labor forces, the uneducation and the discriminated, especially women and immigrants, in the United States and the world. The book begins with a prologue that summarizes briefly the life she led and her journey to change the life of the American people. O’ Farrell obtained a masters degree at Harvard University, and went on to be an affiliated scholar at Stanford University’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender. She was also the study director at the National Research Council, or the National Academy of Sciences. She now is an affiliated scholar, at George Washington University, with the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project. Along with being a scholar and study director, she has written and edited numerous books, presentations and articles, some of which include, Work and Family: Policies for a Changing Work Force and Rocking the Boat: Union Women’s Voices,
