Though many people believe the born gay argument is a controversial topic, if more information was readily available, it would be a more positive and one-sided argument. People on both sides bring forth arguments backed with religion or fact and, of course, both believe they are correct. However, in this case, there is a conclusive scientific explanation.
One side of the ‘born gay’ argument is the belief that people are not born gay. Most of this argument is religiously based. People on this side of the argument believe that the idea that people are not born gay is as outdated as other recently disparaged beliefs, such as being left-handed. “ So, as willfully ignorant Americans blather on about the unnatural choice of being left-handed - I mean homosexual…” (Eichenwald). They argue that if homosexuality were a choice, then animals without higher thought would not have the rate of homosexual tendencies that they do, as “hundreds of species engage in homosexual behavior...for example, about 8 percent of rams exhibit sexual preference for males…” (Eichenwald). There are also several studies that have looked into the possibility of people being born gay and many of them have conclusive evidence that people are, in fact born with tendencies toward a certain sexual orientation. “Sex hormones in prenatal life play a role. For example, girls born with congenital adrenal hyperplasia...show relatively high rates of same-sex attractions as adults” (Rahman). There are also studies in neuroscience that show that “patterns of brain organization appear similar between gay men and heterosexual women and between lesbian women and heterosexual men” (Rahman). Independent research groups have also conducted research on twins to try to figure out patterns in sexuality and have found that “genetic factors explain about 25-30% of the differences between people in sexual orientation”
