“Chase?” A shaky voice echoed from the foyer. I bolted through the doors. A familiar cloud of golden hair stood encircled by a ring of shattered glass, cerulean irises pulsing with masked tension. My eyes quickly caught the hole in the window above the liquor counter and the misshapen rock resting beneath the bar stools.

Blood. That’s all I see as the cold water runs down my back, rinsing out the blood in my hair. I look down at my hands and all I see is more blood. As I turned around to wash off the rest of the blood off, I looked at the light red water swirling around my feet turn to a dark red. The smell of blood was so over powering I could feel my heart thumping, the blood pumping through my veins; I needed more blood.

Nathan Kramr Mrs. Parnell English AAC February 8, 2023 Boxing in the Roaring Twenties During the 1920s, or rather the roaring twenties, the sport of boxing had significant growth and experienced a surge in popularity, and it became one of the most popular sports in America. Boxing had a positive impact on the nation’s economy and boxing made its top fighters very rich. Among them were Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney who had some of the best and most controversial fights of the twenties. Boxing positively benefited the nation, the economy, and its boxers.
Representing the upper classes of society was Gene Tunney, a man of Victorian values with humble roots in a working-class Irish American family who was adored by the middle and upper classes. William Dempsey represented the opposite values, a poor boy from the western United States who left home in his teens to work as a miner, growing up around violence and alcohol. Dempsey would find huge success in boxing; However, he was not a likeable champion as middle-class journals did not look upon him favorably and many viewers seeing him as a villain in Tunney’s story. To further add to his negative image, word of him avoiding service during the war and divorcing of his first wife were spread by journals, ultimately ruining his public reputation, which would be destroyed after his defeat by Tunney in the famous fight.
As I reentered my chamber, I still felt on edge. Why didn’t I hear his bells? I should have at least heard them jingle. I took some opium I had stored in my nightstand, hoping it would help me drift into sleep. All I felt was the thick air of the room as I began to feel more and more anxious.
Each blow spewed more and more blood against my shirt. His head bludgeoned he slowly collapsed to the cold dirty sidewalk. Such excitement! I had never done such a thing! I was free from this judgment and know one would ever know!
I looked around. The window was open and there was doves all over the walls. I glared at the doves. White, pure, fair, and peaceful . I traced my hands across the soft walls.

This fight was not expected to be a slugfest, per se, but what made the fight particularly interesting was that Schmeling kept on telling the public that he had “seen something” in Louis’s style that would cost him the matchup. That “something,” Schmeling later revealed, was that whenever Louis would throw a lead jab, his would lower his lead arm down to his waist, leaving his face and jaw exposed. Come the fight, Schmeling is in the best fighting shape of his life and confident he will beat Louis, but Louis’s confident is akin to Schmeling’s. The determining factor, however, was that Schmeling was in shape and Louis was not. Louis came out strong as he always had in the opening rounds, but he started to fatigue in the mid-rounds and, as Schmeling anticipated, Louis kept dropping his lead arm after he jabbed—and Schmeling took advantage of that.
The roads became more broken down. Suddenly the beeping of the cars startled my thoughts and my world unfroze. I felt the droplets accumulating under my eyes. Tears began rolling down my face. It was at that moment that I realized how honored I was to have everything
With my other hand I clicked the lighter to life. The hot flickering flame danced in front of my watery ocean blue eyes, which were long dulled by all the loss and pain they 've been through. My eyes fell
Boom, bang, pow! Boxing was all I ever thought about as a child. I would dream, eat, and sleep boxing. Though I was a little shrimp weighing in only 75 pounds, I had a very big heart, which gave me the drive to keep on pushing forward. Everyone around me seemed like giants, but that did not stop me from doing what I love.
