Ashley Grob Brachfeld Honors English Period 5 April 23, 2015 Introduction Many World War II events have been forgotten or left unrecognized. Through the use of movies based off of literature, we can be reminded of these notable events. Movies such as The Sound of Music, The Diary of Anne Frank ,etc., are based off of nonfiction occurrences, and help us remember the treachery of this War. There are also fiction movies such as The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and The Imitation Game that hold very important information on the real happenings. There are many sources of literature that could be used to create these motion pictures such as novels, news reports, and diaries. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne is an example of this. This is also a fictional story about children during the holocaust. It helps us realize the hard painful truth of the events that took place. It helps teach us that true friendship pays no attention to race, religion, or stereotypes (Nelson, 2006). Another movie used to help us understand events is the newly released movie The Imitation Game. This movie goes through the ending of the war, and how the British solved Enigma (Waxman, 2015). It was a story unknown by many, until it was brought to the big screen. The final and most important use for movies made from literature in World War II is to help us feel the emotions that were felt during that time. The Sound of Music was a movie based off of the true story of The Trapp Family Singers. This took place during World War II when the children were being removed from England before Germany bombed them (Yagoda, 2014).
