There are two different kinds of disorders, personality disorders and psychological disorders. Psychological disorders are illnesses that an individual experiences as episodes. Personality disorders are enduring traits that are major components of the individual's personality (Rathus, 2010). No matter what kind of disorder a person may possess their lives are affected everyday by them, it takes over their body and consumes them as a person. Disorders are often misunderstood. You do not have the ability to make a split second decision and then continue life without that disorder, it will take lots of counseling. It often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning and the sense of identity. (Psychology Today, 2017). The “borderline” means that it is between neurotic and psychosis. Some causes of having BPD are related to environmental and genetic factors. Studies show that individuals that suffer from BPD report a history of abuse, neglect or separation as a young child. 40-71% patients reported having been sexually abused (Psychology Today, 2017). Symptoms that may occur in an individual may consist of instability of mood, chaotic personal relationships and a disturbed sense of self (Rathus, 2010). The individuals sometimes view themselves as unworthy. They may feel bored, empty or unfairly misunderstood or mistreated, they barely know who they are. They feel isolated and lack social support (Psychology Today, 2017). This is portrayed in the movie within Joan’s relationship with Greg. A specific example occurs when she is in the hotel room and she yells at him. He is ready to walk out the door and leave her but she wants him to stay with her forever and never leave. Another example is when Joan wins the award and then she gets upset that Tina has a wire hanger and throws all of her clothes that were hanging on the hangers on the ground and yells at Tina and starts spanking her with the …show more content…

OCPD is characterized by inflexibility and fixation on rules, procedures. Those with OCPD can be anxious about time, relationships, cleanliness and money. The difference between this and OCD is that with OCD you have to complete a task and that is not the case here (Rathus, 2010). Some causes of obsessive compulsive personality disorder is a combination of genetics and childhood experiences. They may have felt the need to be perfect or feel a need to follow the rules strictly. Symptoms of this include perfectionism, extremely frugal with money, face social isolation. May experience anxiety. They will also feel the need to impose their own standards on their outside environment (Healthline, 2017). This is portrayed in the movie when Joan becomes nervous right before the representatives from the adoption company come to meet her and give Joan her baby. She starts to tidy things up and make sure everything looks okay. My final example is after she becomes very upset with Tina over her clothes being on wired hangers she starts to look to see if the bathroom is cleaned. When she wipes her finger across the counter it isn’t as clean as she would like so she dumps cleaning solution all over the ground and starts to clean it all over
