When we think of heroes first ones to come to mind are fictional characters; Superman, Batman, Spider-Man. These characters are great and their producers have made a lot of money off of them, but true heroes impact lives and put others before themselves. They are willing to sacrifice their social life, family time, and even money to make a positive impact on your life and influence you to strive for excellence and reach your desired goal. Maurice Willows: Unsung Hero of the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 During the early 1900s, African Americans continued their struggle for civil rights on a national scale with seemingly no definitive solution in sight. In the wake of one of the most violent race riots in American history, one man sought to overlook racial differences and the rules of his own organization to provide aid to those in need. Through the leadership of Maurice Willows during the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot, the American Red Cross compromised their mission enabling the organization to be the sole responder, provider of relief, and champion of African American rights. Maurice Willows’ decision to defy the tenets of the Red Cross made him an unsung hero who saved countless lives.
Between the times of the late 1920’s to the late 1930’s Australia fell into a state that we now consider the great depression unemployment rates doubled and more than 20% of Australians were unemployed. Many believed Australia had no economic future. Just as Many people lost confidence in the Australian Government. We were a nation that was falling and very quickly, Australia needed a hero and its prayers were answered, they were given something they could rely on the great Sir Donald Bradman. Donald Bradman is recognised as Australia’s biggest sporting hero, within his career he achieved everything that he could possibly achieve in the cricket.
American actor Christopher Reeve once quoted, "A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles" (Brainy Quote). Not only did he play a hero as Superman, he truly became one in his personal life. After becoming a quadriplegic Reeve became a spokesperson for people with spinal cord injuries. A hero is a person one admires because of the qualities and selfless actions they exemplify to overcome adversity and inspire others. Heroism is apparent in literature, history, and in our own life.
Bo Jackson is known for his ability to play, both, baseball and football at the professional level and succeed at doing so. Bo did many things other great athletes could not even imagine doing. No matter what Bo did he made it look easy, and supernatural. Bo gave people around the Nation hope that they could accomplish great things like him if they worked hard enough. He made things that seemed unrealistic suddenly realistic.

As a whole, this story is an example of courage, and exemplifies this through the actions of the Mirabal sisters.

A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really, deeply cares.” Heroes are relevant to everyone, because at some point, everyone has had a hero. Sadly, today’s society degrades the meaning of the word “hero”. Heroes are an important aspect of life, but famous people are not always heroes.
Anyone can be a hero. For instance, Robert Bentz was being selfless when he put himself between a driver of a stolen car and Bentz’ son. “In the split second of seeing the car coming straight at [his son] Roudy, Bentz cranked his steering wheel as hard as possible. That put him between the oncoming car and his son.” Though Bentz is a normal person, he was still able to save his son from injury.
Heroes put others before themselves and will do anything to ensure that thing’s safety. Many people have either risked their lives or have loss their lives due to trying to save others. An example of this would be the man in the red bandana or Welles Crowther. Crowther was working in the twin towers as planes were crashing into them. Crowther could have ran away from the other people when the planes hit, but he chose not to spare himself, but to save others and sacrifice his own life.
What Defines a Hero? Throughout history many different definitions of heroes have been present. Whether you look at how our culture defines a hero, how the epic poem, “The Odyssey,” defines a hero, how the Bible defines a hero, or how you define a hero. The word hero may mean something to one person but for another person it may mean something else.
