This letter is written in support of Quineshia Peterson, an applicant of the American University Strategic Communication Graduate Program. As the Director of Admissions at Valdosta State University, I have had the honor of working with and mentoring Quineshia during the matriculation of her bachelor’s degree, beginning in 2011. As a freshman at Valdosta State it became apparent that Quineshia was a natural born leader with praiseworthy ambition. She served on the executive board of her student Hall Council, and was an active member of Residence Hall Association.
Being honored for the award led the school to be even more diverse. They engaged themselves so much in racial and ethnic unity which led to intentional diversity because of that the honor for the award was no longer considered, Scheller was told during an interview with Michael Scales and David Turk, the president and provost of the college. The world, as well as ourselves, can become confident. I will encourage scholarship, leadership, and good citizenship with my school and community. With my hardwork, not only shall I benefit, but all that I help shall be benefited as well.
Here at Frostburg State University, I am the Executive Vice President of a major organization on campus called the Black Student Alliance. Our organizations goal is, “To represent and address the needs of the African-American student body and to culturally enrich the campus the campus as a whole through programs and lectures.” This year alone we have gained over 50 active members, and have had a turnout of more than 70 members at every event. Attending a predominantly White institution would be very difficult if there were no cultural groups on campus.
I’ve noticed that being an African American woman places me below the totem pole automatically, placing two strikes again me. However, as a black woman attending a Historically Black College/University, in my heart, I strive to seek academic excellence and create a lasting impression on the world…starting with the community around me. My traditional values are deeply rooted in love, honesty, integrity and the desire to serve. I strongly believe in “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself”. I believe I have great qualities to offer such an organization
It would be amazing to meet new students and encourage them to attend not on The University of Alabama, but also make the Culverhouse College of Commerce their academic home. It is so important to invest in the lives of others, and you never know what impact you can have on a life. By simply being an ambassador, I have the ability to greatly impact someone’s future career. I struggled with choosing a major, and I understand how difficult of a process it can be. I am sure that if I toured Culverhouse initially it would have been my first choice.
Initiating and advocating change for students and the community without the expectation of being recognized is what has made me an HBCU All-Star. The moment I came to Nashville to attend the Illustrious Tennessee State University, I vowed to be an advocate for change and lead on and off campus. Countless hours and many sacrifices were made to ensure that my scholarship exemplified academic excellence. Extensive strategic planning and professional development was completed to ensure that my leadership was effective for my student body, local community, and the HBCU community at large. Humble and willing service to my community is what I’ve executed through my civic engagement in political and community affairs.

Specifically, I will discuss the Black Panther Party (BPP), American Indian Movement (AIM), Justice for Janitors (JfJ), and Gay Latinos Alliance (GALA) and how each of them faced their experiences of injustice regarding the issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality. As a prospective college student, one looks for a wide variety of specific characteristics in a future home; A certain size, definitive mission statement, divergent student body, blossoming educational programs, and an abundance of opportunity were at the top of my list. I found all of these criteria to not only to be met by Drake University, but most were far surpassed. The institution seemed to be progressive and yet historic, accommodating to those for whom it was necessary while allowing vast amounts of freedom to all. Drake University appeared to be perfect in all regards, an utopia of equality. Shortly after moving onto campus, I discovered that my campus of bliss was not quite the fairytale story of impartiality I had been told.

The diversity of Rutgers University, has made my experience at Rutgers exciting, prompting me to interact with people that I previously may have been too shy to interact with. The diversity of the campus, students, and staff make Rutgers a comfortable place to live as there will always be at least one person that matches your interest here, whether it is playing Pokemon Go, Kendama, or even just Underwater Basket Weaving.
