Four months into the school year and this portfolio project has brought me to a number of realizations. The choices I made in my Technical Theatre I classes worked well, I feel they lead to a deeper understanding of the elements of design and they made points I had a hard time making in the past. While in my advanced class, I struggled to get a majority of students engaged in the large “Macbeth” project. During this semester, I came to the conclusion I need to fight more for the right to “approve” students for my advanced class. I don’t want my classes to become a dumping ground for students not willing to work.

The city of Renton placed a zoning ordinance in previous years prohibiting that adult films cannot be located within 1,000ft of a resident, church, park, or school. Playtime Theaters felt that the city of Renton location ordinance was a violation of the First and Fourteenth amendments of the United States Constitution. Playtime Theaters decided to file a suit in Federal District Court seeking an injunction and declaratory judgment claiming that their First and Fourteenth amendment were violated, because of the type of films that they were going to showcase.

What being Hispanic means to me is mainly opportunity. I say opportunity not only in terms of my educational interests, but my social and cultural ones as well. For example, one area in which I 've seen myself taking advantage of these opportunities is theatre. Over the past 3 years at DePauw, I have been very involved with DePauw theatre, and this past year especially, have taken leadership roles within the department. This involvement has opened my eyes as to exactly how little people of color are represented within theatre, not only in acting roles, but especially in leadership roles.

Our study focused on the zoning by the city through three different time periods the 1960’s, 1990’s and the present around The National Black Theater in Harlem. We also included the population statistics and median income surrounding the theater and the resulting socioeconomic effects. The focus was also about understanding the zoning from the 1960’s- present and how it directly shaped the landscape for the Harlem of today. For the National Black Theater their future is directly tied to the surrounding neighborhood and its inhabitants.

His plays, surprisingly enough, were published after his death. Shakespeare published thirty-seven plays, while historians believe there may have been twenty more as well.
The use of masks in theatre, both functionally and symbolically can be dated back to hundreds of decades ago, along with speculations that the earliest masks came from the Neolithic period. While it is yet unknown which civilization first created or developed masks, it is clear that the existence of these masks are not without justifications. The non-theatrical use of the word “mask” is often referred to as the concealing of “something from view”, usually the human face (Oxford Dictionary Online). However, in many different types of theatre, masks do not solely function for the purpose of concealing. The function of masks differs for different forms of theatre, and is dependent on the relevant attributing background factors.
From Colonial Williamsburg Theatre to Broadway, theatre is ever-changing. The differences in each era of theatre are vast; the costumes, staging, acting techniques, and audiences all vary drastically from each other. The major eras and genres of American theatre include the colonial era, the Post-Revolution era, the Civil War era, Broadway, and Post-Modern—all with unique and varying aspects to them.
