The World State’s’ motto “community, stability, and identity” plays a lead role in the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, which implements a price to pay for a structure of how a stable society should be governed. In this alternate world, people are manufactured and then programmed to add to the so called community they oversee. In the infamous quote, the world they live in strictly circles around anything that makes these three pillars harmonize into one perfect utopia. From the moment one is born, these people are conditioned and automatically assigned a role to play in the World State. As both are from the World State, there are many surprises along the way that open their eyes to a new civilization. There they meet Linda, John’s mother, who has different features that are abnormal to their alternate world. Lenina who has never seen anything “so fat [with] lines in her face, the flabbiness, the wrinkles” were terrifying her as this was new exposure (119). The invigorating experience led Lenina to think about the perfectly formed and young humans she was accustomed to knowing in her environment. The communities clashed with their differences causing a strong sense of popularity for John. His culture of natural birth, aging, and emotions in opposition to Lenina’s and Bernard’s society. As John gained attention for his exposure, he began to observe the ugliness of the World State. With the numbing of the doctors minds when it came to death petrified John so greatly, he made the decision to help others under the control. John tries to make the World State people have feeling by telling them to read Shakespeare’s heartfelt tragedies and to stop taking soma, by throwing it all away, because it is a horrible poison (210). John feels strongly about following his advice, especially after his mother, Linda, dies after going on a soma holiday. Equality between the classes of society may seem like the perfect solution to this world’s problems. However, if everyone was the same level class then a “man would go mad if he had to do Epsilon Semi-Moron work” which is the crummy work of the society (222). There is a reason certain level jobs get done so the world can function with ease. Everyone was born with their own position which makes their society seem organized and well put together.
