There seems to be a thin line between bravery and arrogance, especially in Chris McCandless case. Chris lived in nature for months. He started his journey with no plan and with only the dream to be out in nature. He dropped his life and set out for the wildness to be away from the all of society’s rules and expectations. It could be considered brave because most people leaving everything behind and going out into the unknown is very scary, but Chris didn’t have that sense of fear in him. Shaun Callarman said “He made a lot of mistakes based on arrogance,” that is very true. Chris did everything with the motive that he could do it which made him arrogant and ended up causing his life to end. Chris decided to leave his entire life behind. He didn’t tell anyone where he was going and what he was doing and only briefly mentioned to his sister his plans. He changed his name to Alex so no one could try and find him. Jon Krakauer perfectly described Chris that showed his young, native and arrogance, “[Chris] was a raw youth who mistook passion for insight and acted according to an obscure, gap-ridden logic (Krakauer 155) ”. He really left one day without any real preparation and had this romanticized idea of what it was he was doing and thought that he was enough. If he made an effort to keep even a little of touch with his parents or someone who was responsible he would have lowered the amount of danger he was in. However, Chris didn’t believe in that, he wanted to erase all tracing of him from society and he would soon realize that it caused him a lot suffering.
