Everywhere in the world, there are a number of rules that people unknowingly abide without noticing them whatsoever. These set of rules are what makes a society function properly in a social level. Examples of these are shown largely in the psychological field, noticing the reactions of people as they are confronted with a socially awkward situation is known as breaching the social norm. Not only are these rules shown in communities that have a small population but they also range to groups/communities in all sizes. The main idea of this experiment was to breach the social norm and to do this, we received a test subject that would stroll around a crowded mall and while doing so, the subject would be carrying a bright red umbrella. To gather the information from the experiment, Sehyun and I would gather information from the shoppers as the subject was attempting to break the social norm. since the mall was most occupied in the weekends, that was when we decided to conduct our experiment. From the experiment, the reactions were classified into 4 different fields. The most common reaction were people looking away from Our subject. As the subject strolled around the crowded mall, 59 people immediately looked away from him the moment they saw our subject’s actions. They immediately attempted to react that nothing strange was happening. They did not want any part of the social norm breaching action. Another common reaction were the people that immediately moved away/ turned around from the subject, pretending that he did not exist. As our subject walked around the mall, an outstanding 40 people diverted paths from our subject. Rather than simply looking away the people in the mall found the actions of the subject so awkward that they simply walked away. Many Other were puzzled by the subject’s actions. These people had no idea how to react the the subject’s actions, hence why they began to look puzzled. There weren’t very many people that showed this reaction however, there were still 31 people that did
