Norms are classified as ‘unwritten’ rules based on social and cultural values that represent an individual’s basic knowledge of how an individual should properly behave (McLeod 2008, Par. 1). Every social group is defined differently when it comes to norms; family, School, Peer groups, or Media all influence our norms. Socialization plays a big role in norms by preparing children to participate in social groups and teaching them general expectations on how to play their expected social roles. No matter what, norms play a huge role in our society. Without norms living together in a society would be complete chaos and individuals wouldn’t have any self-control. According to the US Census Bureau there are more and more single-parent families, and 56 percent of all mothers with children under 6 years old are working (Mondal 2013). 10 million children five years old or younger have mothers who don’t work from home, for these kids daycare is an important agent of socialization. These children are learning who to become by watching other children interact in public or in a daycare setting. Another huge role in socialization is your peer group, whom people surround themselves by will be who they will become.
