Conformity Conformity is the behavior in accordance with socially accepted standards, rules, or laws. Conformity is expressed in the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, in the two characters of Cyrano and Christian. Cyrano is insecure about his outside appearance and Christian’s insecurity is on the inside. Conformity creates justice and equality, but if rejected that leads to an individual having self esteem issues, and a society where there is no individuality. Conformity creates justice and equality in a society because of the laws and standards set to keep people safe and secure.
In order to be accepted in the current social society, you must follow a certain set of norms throughout life. Social norms are the unwritten rules on behavior that are expected and established opinions on what is appropriate and what is not. People who do not follow these instilled norms may be casted aside, judged, or suffer a consequence. Society’s expectations have dictated what normal human behavior is that people conform to as a way of life. These norms, however, are not set in stone, so they may be challenged.
Everyone has their perfect or utopian world, but once you put that world into everyone’s perspective, it looks darker. A government that creates an emotionless world can cause problems with sympathy towards others or fear keeping us away from danger. Governments that also control their people through common appliances can put everyone into some sort of trance. Our government is like those in dystopian-style books in that our government censors certain information they don’t want us to know. Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver are good examples of governments that prefer control over conformity.
For instance, when Winston was talking about their government it says, “This was not illegal (nothing was illegal, since there were no longer any laws), but if detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death, or at least twenty-five years in a forced labor camp”(Orwell 3). No laws in their society,which makes everything “legal” but if you do something the government does not like there is no judicial system to prevent you from being in a work camp for five years. Technology is used to watch everything that you do so if the government sees something they don’t like then they can vaporize you. In the world of Oceania, if there were laws, everything would be different but since there are no laws people have a sense of freedom. The people should feel like they are free, but having no laws keeps them captive, making them unable to do anything that the government would not like.
Society can govern and police themselves most of the time. The pressure it can put on people to make them conform to it’s expectation is too much. Being too different is highly discouraged and the same is true
Since all men are equal, everyone should be loyal to each other and if they are not they are committing great sin. Therefore in this society the government controls society by setting laws that forbidden individualism and also who the citizens socializes
William Shakespeare’s work has been involved in the high school curriculum for many years. Many say that Shakespeare’s ideas reveal the true human nature and that's why young adults need to study about him; However, the more that teens study Shakespeare some have agreed that it shouldn’t be apart of the standard High School curriculum due to the fact that the old English has no importance to them. Although William Shakespeare is an amazing dramatist and his works show the true reality of the world, Shakespeare’s writings and ideas need to be offered as an elective rather than having it forced on students in the normal English classes. Young teenargers today believe that the peices William Shakespeare wrote are irrelevant to them, and they are correct.
One of the main functions of the government is to protect their citizens by the reducing the number of crimes. Although, there is still a large number of crimes committed and the government does not act to provide justice to some people. Either way, the government must create regulations to be able to protect the people in the society. In the Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes explains, “For the actions of men proceed from their opinions, and in the well governing of opinions consisteth the well governing of men’s actions in order to their peace and concord” (110). For instance, if the government does not control the people, people will commit more crimes and there will always be chaos.
But, it seems that having everything so orderly creates a straight path to things that most people need or want in life. Having a strict community in today’s world seems like it would do more good than bad, but if everything is set up perfectly in one’s life then it will cause one to lose crucial traits that are required to build a strong person, such as work ethic. A society is an organized group of people living as members of a community. In order for a society to function, rules must exist. Rules are needed to prevent chaos, to provide boundaries, and to stop the spread of fear and hate. One reason that rules are needed in a society is to prevent chaos; people need order because order is part of what makes a society.
Imagine a world with no rules or laws? How would humanity behave if we could do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted, because there were no consequences for our actions? In the novel Lord of the Flies, the author, William Golding illustrates if we lived our lives in this way, humanity could easily revert back to savage ways. The book tells the story of a group of British boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island, they attempt to form a stable government. It all falls to pieces when a group of boys start caring more about fun than surviving.
Obedience and Emotion "Rules are the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" (Harry Day). Although boundaries and guidelines are important for the success of a society, it is also invaluable to know the gift of freedom. If one is foolishly obedient and follows only the orders they are given, there is no growth for their future. People will start to become robots and will never learn some of life's most crucial lessons.
In Australian society, if there were no laws, then people could do anything they wished. Some individuals believe this is the right way to manage our society. A state of anarchy becomes problematic when society is unable to function because everyone operates according to their own desires. Imagine a world without law; you would be open to all manner of abuse and assault.
It is expected that those living within the society live up to and conform to those norms in order to achieve the societal values. Different types of social norms include, folkways, mores, taboos and laws. Social norms are generally learned from an early age without us realising it, and as a result we assume that the norms
In our freshman year of high school ninth graders must learn the many things in each of their subjects. In english class students are required to learn William "Bard of Avon" Shakespeare’s works. With Shakespeare 's works of literature and drama being 400 years old it’s expected that many people don’t want Barb’s works to be taught in the curriculum in schools. Shakespeare 's works should not be taught to students in schools because it’s difficult for students to understand, his work is not culturally diverse, and is outdated for today’s students. First, it’s difficult for many students to understand Shakespeare’s dialogue.
