Annie, breastfeeding could be a difficult task to accomplish; however, there are classes that can teach new moms how to breast and make you comfortable with the process. In addition breastfeeding is essential for the baby, currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, followed by breastfeeding with the introduction of complementary foods until at least 12 month of age, then continue breastfeeding for as long as the mother and the baby wish (ATI, 2013, p.52). The amount of calcium absorbed is enhanced and the milk is low in sodium. It is also very beneficial for the growth and development of the infant. The contraindications of breastfeeding arethat it may cause pain or discomfort and different breast size. Breastfed infants eat often,and for mothers that work after giving birth, it can be difficult to pump every so often. Some medications pass through the milk, so, the mother needs to be careful what the medications she takes, otherwise the infant intakes the medication as well. The mother also needs to follow a well-balanced diet, which means avoiding certain food and beverages; such as spicy food, due to the potential for causes the infant discomfort or gas.
