Unit 2 Discussion: Prenatal Development Readings: Chapter 3 and 4 A teratogen is any exposure in the environment such as drugs, illnesses, alcohol that can cause substantial harm to an unborn or breastfeeding baby. There are some teratogens that even if the mother was exposed to or poisoned at one point before getting pregnant can still cause harm to the unborn baby even if she is no longer exposed. Lead can be considered a teratogen as it is a toxic metal and can cause harm during the embryonic period.
The three prime areas are the foundations for a child’s learning and development, it helps the child’s ability to learn and form relationships as well as their wellbeing. As the children get older they become increasingly competent and need to broaden their skills. This is where the four specific areas aim to do this. A child that is more confident from doing the prime areas will build a better platform for success when starting the more specific areas. The children are all unique and progress at different paces, this should be taken into consideration when planning for a child.

The article I chose is titled “In a Mother’s Milk, Nutrients, and a Message, Too,” it was written by Carl Zimmer, and published on November 6, 2014. Zimmer elaborates on how a new study has found out that mother’s milk does not only provide the newborn with essential nutrients, but also transmits messages to the infant. The study published by the journal Ecology shows that cortisol, a stress hormone, is often transmitted from the monkey mother to its baby through breast milk. It was demonstrated that cortisol, produced by the mother, is transmitted to the offspring through milk and they develop receptors in response. Moreover it was found out that babies feeding on milk with cortisol gained more weight than those who received milk without it.
Intervention should start as early as possible, like when parents begin to notice their child is not developing as expected and they voice these concerns. A common response is “they will grow out of it or we will just wait and see”. But, the longer the wait the more difficulties the child and family will have. The earlier a problem is identified, the earlier intervention can begin, which leads to the likelihood of the child learning the skills they need to communicate, engage in social interactions and manage behaviors. Research shows that children who receive early intervention services are more likely to have improved long-term outcomes.
In the case of a safe delivery and healthy newborn, a woman must nourish her offspring through her own milk, or formula if she chooses, only hours after birth, though this is more for learning experiences for the baby on how to eat than to provide nutrition. A child must learn to suck so they may eat to keep nourished and hydrated. If one does not learn to eat, they will more easily get sick, lose weight, face the possibility of hospitalization and even death. The nutrition from a mother’s milk is much healthier for a child than formula because it provides the child with antibodies to assist them in fighting off infections within their own
Q1.3 Explain the impact of adolescent development on a young person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours A1.3 Adolescence is a time of great change for young people when physical changes are happening at an accelerated rate. Puberty is accompanied by physical, psychological and emotional changes adapted to ensure reproductive and parenting success. But adolescence is not just marked by physical changes – young people are also experiencing cognitive, social/emotional and interpersonal changes as well. It marks a transition in risks for depression and other common mental disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders and anti social behaviours. As they grow and develop young people are influenced by outside factors, such as their environment, culture, religion, school and the media.
1/10 Understanding how children and young people develop 1.1 Explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development from birth - 19 years. The rate at which all children develop varies from child to child, however the sequence of development is very similar. The ways in which children and young people develop are measured are social, physical, intellectual, communication and emotional development (SPICE).
Breastfeeding is the body’s natural way of producing food for infants. Breast milk is the most easily digested food source for infants. The calorie and fat density within breast milk varies according to what the baby demands throughout developmental stages and growth spurts. During the last few weeks of pregnancy, a mother’s body creates a thick, fatty, nutrient dense milk called colostrum. After a few days of nursing, the mother’s milk supply comes in and the colostrum is replaced with a creamy milk.
Everyone needs that special bond with their mother. However, if the mother decides to formula feed that allows someone else to get to feed and bond with the baby, perhaps the father. Another reason a mother should breastfeed is because it can benefit mom and the baby. The hormone that
Explain the importance to children’s holistic development of Speech, language and communication This development is important for children’s holistic development as this will help the children to socialise and help them express what they like and need, this will get them to have more sense about the world. If the child can communicate this will help them with their confident and self-esteem levels as they can talk about how they feel.it is important for children to use their own language skills and not to listen to other all the time and this could put their development back. Adults should praise children a lot so they have the encouragement try new things but it is important you adults to give them feedback so that they can learn from right and wrong.
A small group of older infants in the American study needed more iron and zinc, such as from iron-fortified baby foods.[6] A substantial proportion of toddlers and preschoolers exceeded the upper recommended level of synthetic folate, preformed vitamin A, zinc, and sodium (salt).[6 ] The World Health Organization recommends starting in small amounts that gradually increase as the child gets older: 2 to 3 meals per day for infants 6 to 8 months of age and 3 to 4 meals per day for infants 9 to 23 months of age, with 1 or 2 additional snacks as required. Through the first year, breastmilk or infant formula is the main source of calories and
When money is tight, you can always create your own baby food. Many baby foods found in stores are safe and convenient, however many contain a lot of sugar, water and starch. Homemade ones have lower amounts and are more natural. Babies don't need to consume solid foods until they are at 4-6 months old. Babies younger than 4-6 months old have not learned how to swallow.
The arrival of a new baby, especially the first always marks a new beginning for a mother. It comes with a lot of challenges more so if the mother is less knowledgeable about baby care. Take such as cleaning the baby for the first time, or feeding, it is not easy. The baby is still fragile and slippery and needs a special care. But if the mother is not ready for all these, or maybe, does not have any knowledge on what to do, the baby’s life might be endangered since the baby needs a special care which only the mother can give.
