One could assume that symbolism is the backbone to all literature. Without symbolism the piece of literature is inadequate, lacking representations of objects, people, and situations. However Eudora Welty’s work “A Worn Path” proves the prominence of symbolism in any prose. The short story about a woman’s ability to face nature, mankind, and one’s own self. The protagonist is an woman named Phoenix Jackson who has an unforgettable nature.
Discoveries can be fresh, meaningful and extremely influential in the emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual realms. This compels individuals to introspect, whilst formulate anew their perceptions and values towards the world, leading to an altering of individuals understandings on themselves and others. Discoveries can be influenced by one’s personal, cultural and historical context, leading to a challenging of previously formulated perspectives. Additionally, the experience of a discovery, whether it be positive or negative, can be intensely meaningful and paramount for an individual. Furthermore, discoveries can be triggered by the uncovering of fresh and unique information that challenges one’s predilections.
In Susan Wolf’s article “The Meaning of Lives” she argues a meaningful life is engaged in positive projects to some degree of success. She also believes that the pursuits with meaning have an objective value that connects with the rest humanity. Susan Wolf’s did not write about her thoughts on the concept of plugging oneself into an experience machine like described by Christopher Grau in “Bad Dreams, Evil Demons, and the Experience Machine”, but her argument for what gives meaning to a life makes it clear that she would argue someone should choose to not plug in. The reason a person would choose to plug into an experience machine is because they could live out all of their fantasies and avoid all the discomfort experienced in real life. But
Hundreds of colonist sailed to early Jamestown to create a new settlement. But they had quite a few things that they didn’t think all the way through while coming here. Most of their colonists died so they had to keep on bringing more to make the settlement bigger and stronger. The colonist mainly died from disease, starvation, and nature. One of the reasons that most colonist died was that they didn’t have enough food and water to survive.
Curiosity is just a subtle word that may not seem relevant in one’s life, yet it’s the reason everyone starts the thinking process driving them through the intricate roads of knowledge and achievement. Knowledge and achievement can be thought of as a positive component dividing each person, as most people would be thrilled to be introduced to knowledge and beyond it. Because of this reaction, people feel as though they have achieved a goal in life, leading them to the new feeling of happiness. In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521, the main character, undergoes this same process as curiosity consumes him.
Carol Joyce Oates’ “Where Are You Going Where Have You Been?” presents how falling into temptation leads to giving up control and innocence. Though her mother is unapproving of her actions, Connie spends her time seeking attention from male strangers. Home alone, Connie is approached by a compelling creature who convinces her to leave her life and join him on his unknown journey. Through disapproving her family, having multiple appearances, listening to music, and her desperation to receive attention from boys, Connie gives up control of herself losing the purity of adolescents and contributing to her detrimental fate. It is imperative that one should not be controlled because of a desire to impress others.
In the short story, “A Worn Path,” Eudora Welty introduces an elderly, African American, woman named Phoenix Jackson, whom for two or three years has made a long quest to town to get medicine for her ill grandson. Initially, Phoenix must overcome many obstacles to reach climax of her journey. Eudora Welty uses these obstacles to demonstrate the theme of her story, which is that Phoenix’s ambition/hope was the leading role in her preserving. The first obstacle that displays Phoenix’s determination to succeed, was when she came to a hill during her quest to town.
