On The Come Up is a coming of age story of a black 16 year old girl trying to find her voice in a society where she feels voiceless while trying to live up to the legacy of her dad, who was a legendary rapper. In the society we live in, many teens feel that they do not have a voice, that they are not being heard. This is the case especially for many teens of colour who are constantly marginalized and racialized and try to find their voice and strength through that struggle. Since most famous up in coming rappers are men. They do not expect a young girl like Bri to make an impact on the rap scene but she proved them wrong. When Bri and her Aunt Pooh enter the studio for her first recording the people in the studio mock and make fun of Bri by saying “Hold up, you made That for this li’l girl? What she gon’ do, spit some nursery rhymes?”(105). The people at the studio including the Producer were making fun of and mocking Bri because she was a girl, and they did not expect anything good to come from her raps. Even though they made fun of her Bri still found her strength and rapped extremely well leaving them shocked and later liking their songs. Even though Bri received countless stereotypes whether it was about her skin colour or her gender, she did not let that stop her from sharing her voice to the world, and that voice lit a fire under countless teenagers leading to more of them to speak their mind and overall having an impact on the majority of the people. Teenagers often get stereotyped either because of their gender or their skin colour, they rarely speak up or take action which results in getting singled out and treated unfairly. This book inspires teens to find their voice during those situations. Also,in life difficult relationships are often the reason teenagers choose to be reserved and not share much, it is important that they find their voice and find a way to fix it. In addition, teenagers are quick to find aspirations and dreams, they later develop their talent by following their own voices and figuring out their strengths.
