In The Divide, author Matt Taibbi conveys to the reader the inner workings of temporary assistance offices. Taibbi argues that in order to receive benefits, one must wait hours in line at the offices and hopefully be accepted to get benefits. Even after waiting, they may be rejected for discrepancies found in their homes, such as clothes not suiting for a single mother or a child at school when you are asking for food stamps for him. An example that Taibbi discussed was a couple working at a fast food restaurant that was expecting a child.
In chapter 2, he expounds that in order to achieve success, you must have provided 10,000 hours of attentive work. Throughout this chapter, he goes through successful stories of businessmen and musicians, who have earned the title of a professional. Gladwell introduces us to one of the most “influential people in modern history of computing”,Bill Joy. Joy studied at the University of Michigan, where he collected most his 10,000 hours of intensive work. Without the completion of his hard work, he would have not been able to become a prosperous programmer who would one day cofound the Silicon Valley firm Sun Microsystems.
After high school he went to college for a short period of time then after a semester he dropped out and started hacking into government computers to try
As in the introduction, he tries using ethos when he says “While I was serving as director of the National Center on Performance Incentives at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University..” he tries to make readers believe he knows what he’s talking about, making himself seem like an expert. Towards the end he mentions policymakers
The legal status of blacks in early colonial Virginia is a hard issue to grasp and make sense of. It was not easy to determine the legal status of an individual of African descent in colonial Virginia because there were hardly any laws and regulations that were developed upon the arrival of the first group of blacks in 1619,through developing rules and regulation relating to slavery was how the legal status of people of African descent in colonial Virginia began to take place and into effect. It was when these rules and laws were already established was when Virginian colonists began to take notice of the blacks and how they were different, distinguishing them from the rest of the Virginians. In this paper the following issues will be discussed, how the first Africans came to Virginia, the legal status of blacks, how those laws came to be created, and the different type of methods that were used to distinguish blacks from the Virginians.
Malcolm Gladwell writes a powerful book in Outliers that really makes us think about success and what it takes to be successful. Gladwell’s claim that the upper middle class has more opportunities than the poor rests upon the questionable assumption that individuals with an upper middle class background do not have to work hard to be successful. Therefore, we should reconsider Gladwell’s claim because successful people still had to work hard and seize those opportunities. I still believe that we can better ourselves and have a better life than what we started with.
He has written many books, and has talked about the evolution and creation of technology

Conrad Hill once said “You are always a student, never a master. You have to keep moving forward.” Steve Jobs reiterates this during his 2005 Stanford graduating class commencement speech. In it, Jobs talks to the graduates about his experiences and how they apply to the concept of never giving up. By guiding the audience through events in his life, Jobs encourages them to keep moving forward, and to never settle with what’s been given to them.
