World War II was one of the worst and largest conflicts in recent history. It saw the rise and fall of many world leaders, armies and countries, as well as the rise of communism. The conflict also laid the groundwork for many future conflicts up until today. During the war, there were many battles and confrontations, from Asia, Europe, and colonies, such as North Africa. Many countries were thrown into war with rival nations due to their allegiance to either the Allies or the Axis. On August 31st, the day before the invasion, the Nazi’s staged an attack on their radio station near the German border to make it look as if the Polish Army had attacked it. The Nazi’s used this as an excuse to invade Poland. Unlike the Germans, who had their army along the border prepared for weeks, the Polish Army wasn't prepared for the German invasion on September 1st. The rest of their army were situated along the French border incase of an attack from France. The German army used a new tactic, known as Blitzkrieg. This involved attacking quickly with tanks, supported by fighter planes as well as dive-bomb aircraft. This new tactic enabled the Nazis to attack quickly and push through land more quickly, avoiding the long and hard battles of WW1 which used trench warfare tactics. The Germans had planned for a quick invasion, because they anticipated that France and Great Britain would declare war on Germany when news got through of the invasion. England’s Prime Minister at the time, Neville Chamberlain, had delivered an ultimatum to Hitler demanding that the German Army leave Poland or it and the Commonwealth will declare war on Germany. Hitler ignored the request and on September 3rd, 1939, France, Britain and Australia, being an ally to England, declared war on Germany. ‘Britain at War!
