“Amazing Grace” is about a time when John Newton was in a storm and prayed for the Lord’s mercy. John Newton was born in London on July 24, 1725. His mother was Elizabeth Scatliff. Newton loved learning from his mother because his father was barely ever around. Newton’s mother was a Christian religious woman. She prayed for him all the time. She prayed that he would become a minister when he got older. When he was young his mother made sure she taught him everything she knew about God’s word. By the time Newton was four, he could read the bible and say verses. Newton was seven years old when his mother died and that was the worst. He lost his mother and he barely had his father. It wasn’t much of a help because by the time he got back, he was even more disobedient. Newton refused to follow orders and he always made fun of everyone that believed in God. Newton tried to remember what his mother taught him when he was younger but it didn’t make him feel better. He would try to fast and pray but that would only last for a little bit, then he would go back to being rebellious. One day while Newton was out at sea, he read a book that convinced him there was no God. First, Newton thought it was wrong not to believe in God but eventually he got used to not having to answer to one.

The words of “Amazing Grace” tell the story of Newton being confronted by a severe storm during a slave trading expedition in 1748, where he prayed for the Lord’s mercy and survived . He called it his “great turning day”. He got waken up by a crazy storm and the Greyhound ship was about to sink. He saw a man get knocked into the water and never saw him ever again after that. He was so scared that he called on God. He Pleaded “Lord have mercy on us”. Newton steered the ship for 11 hours and eventually the storm calmed down.
