1 Samuel introduces us to Eli, Samuel, Saul, and David. All played a pivotal role in the direction of Israel and in God’s plans.
Eli was a priest in the tabernacle at Shiloh. It was here that Hannah prayed for a son. If God gave her a son she would give him to God’s service. God answered her prayer and when Samuel was old enough she took him to Eli and left him at the tabernacle to serve God.
Samuel grew in the Lord and served honorably. Do you remember the Book of Judges? We learned about Deborah, Gideon, Samson and others. Well Samuel was the last judge of Israel. He was also a priest and prophet. As Israel’s leader, God allowed him to defeat the Philistines, bringing peace to the land.

God was their king, but the people still clamored for different leadership, so God gave them what they wanted, with a warning they would be sorry.
God instructed Samuel to anoint Saul as the first king. Saul starts out strong by defeating the Ammonites, who wanted to rule over the Israelites and humiliate them. His success here unified the people and they supported him as king.
It didn’t take long for Saul to begin to think he was special, and he started doing things his way and not God’s way. Because he constantly disobeyed God, God told Samuel to anoint David as the next king. The Spirit of the LORD left Saul and he was tormented by depression and fear. David would come and play the harp for Saul to help him calm down.
During this time David began to have successes, and the people sang of his great feats. Saul became jealous and David fled and hid in the wilderness. He had about 600 men with him. God protected David and Saul was never able to kill him.
This book tells us the story of David and Goliath. Goliath was a giant Philistine, who David killed with a slingshot. We also read about a great friendship between Saul’s son Jonathan and David. When David was hiding from Saul, Jonathan helped
