“Now it seems that something that has been lurking in our cupboards for centuries is public enemy number one: it’s sugar.” This was said by fiona philips in the documentary “The Truth About Sugar” a BBC production. The main goal of the documentary is to encourage a lowering of refined sugar in your diet. Her opening point appeals to your pathos and feeling “she is like me not knowing about sugar”. There are three scenes that are of interest in the documentary. These are: A man named Simon and showing the viewer what his habits are, showing people the effects of sugar on the brain of a sugar addict, and a scientific demonstration with a net ball team. First, a large man named Simon with red hair appears on screen. Cheery music puts you in a lighthearted mood and appeals to pathos by making you feel happy. Fiona narrates as it shows him drinking soda and shows his mini fridge full of soda. She is talking in a concerned tone of voice appealing to pathos by making it seem like his sugar addiction could be fatal. There is a faint white light putting light on his face and casting a shadow on the wall. They appeal to ethos by bringing in a neuroscientist to explain very simply that the brain wants you to eat energy dense foods. It is appealing to logos by pointing to a part of the brain involving the reward system and that it is involved in her craving. The camera’s zoom is set in a portrait style because the people are in focus but the background is blurred. The lighting and the atmosphere is very sterile and severe like a hospital. Voices are the only thing you can hear as if they want you to pay close attention to the emotions on Kara’s face and what the doctor and Kara are
