Briony is known to have read the letter intended for Cecilia. Cecilia however, is extremely worried for Briony reading it. Briony doesn't answer Cecilia clearly even though she is barraged with questions about it. However, Briony is absolutely intrigued about how she sees adults and their interactions between each other. Briony now wants to grow up and be in a world of maturity. She feels that the letter would improve her writing. As she begins writing again, Lola enters the room and abruptly cries telling her about how the twins have physically tortured her. She is seen with scratch and burn marks on her body. Cecilia takes Robbie into a dark corner in the library to have sex but is interrupted by Briony who believes that Robbie is attacking Cecilia. This is a result of Cecilia realising that she loves Robbie. The dinner itself is very uncomfortable due to a lack of water and high room temperature. The twins ask to be excused and run away from the residence. Everybody creates search parties to go look for them. The police are notified about the twins running away. The father is as well. To do this, she decides its best to identify Robbie as an enemy of the family. Briony notices two bushed in the distance that soon to take the appearance of two people. She then realises that one of the bushes is Lola and the other figure starts to walk towards the house. Briony thinks that the other figure was Robbie which is walking away from attacking and taking advantage of Lola. Briony however is not certain that it was him. The police arrive at the house and Briony runs up to tell them that Robbie has attacked Lola and is purely evil. She even feels it is best to show the letter to the police and Emily.
