Last night on February 4, 1787, General Benjamin Lincoln attacked members of the Shays’ Rebellion, and successfully captured 150 of the rebels. As a result, Daniel Shays left Massachusetts and fled to Vermont. Shays Rebellion was an armed rebellion consisting of 1,200 angry farmers from Massachusetts. They caused major chaos in this state. On December 26, 1786 Daniel Shays and the rebels revolted in Springfield, Massachusetts insisting that the state legislature address their issues, such as lack of money.
England had never directly taxed the colonies before because it was against British law since the American colonies were not represented
Arguably, these taxes were only placed by Britain to “milk” the colonies for profit. Ben Franklin responded to the Stamp Act, writing a letter to John Hughs to discuss efforts to get it repealed (Document G). . In a way, the series of taxes applied by Parliament would spark a fire within the colonists and begin the American Revolution, where Americans finally say enough is enough. The time had come for political and ideological change, where the colonies would break from their motherland, Great Britain. In conclusion, the French Indian War would kick off a series of political, economic, and ideological events that changed the relationship between Britain and its colonies forever.

Under the molasses act colonial merchants had been required to pay a tax of sixpence per gallon on the importation of foreign molasses,but because of corruption,they mostly evaded the tax and undercut the intention of the tax that the english product would be cheaper than that from the french from west indians.this hurt the british west indies market in molasses. The colonies were upset because they were the only ones getting taxed and not the rest of britain. Another tax was passed,however this placed taxes on many items. This tax is called the stamp act.the stamp taxes newspaper,lines and colonial paper product.these are all paper items.if you’re wondering why all these taxes are getting placed,its because the king was trying to pay off all the war debt, however after the stamp act was passed a series of resolution are published stating the stamp act violates the right of colonies.
Many people tend to believe the end of the Revolutionary War meant the end of all problems in America, but that was not the case. The return to a normal lifestyle after the war was long-awaited and anticipated by just about everyone, as soldiers were reunited with their families and people once again had access to all the things made unavailable during wartime. This boom in morale and economics was however, short lived as the newly established government was faced with paying off the debts to other countries and the soldier who risked their lives for years. Shays’ Rebellion was the first rebellion to happen in the United States after they broke away from England. It was viewed in many ways and was considered the start of chaos. When Thomas Jefferson heard about it he believed it was not the start of chaos but a good thing. Jefferson said that no country would be able to go on without any problems. In the letter it states that “Where has there ever been a conflict except in the single instance of Shays’ rebellion?”
Tens of thousands of people were killed during the Battle of Britain. Many of the fatalities were innocent civilians caught in the middle of enemy fire. Most that lived through the terrible battle were left without a place to live. Though Britain won the battle, many people’s lives were lost, countless houses were destroyed, and iconic structures were burned to the ground. Was it worth it?
The Founding Fathers rebelled against the British government for good reasons, which led to the American Revolution in 1783. The Founding Fathers were justified in rebelling against the Britain because the government was not protecting the rights of the citizens, taxing the colonists, and forced them to house British soldiers. In 1756 Britain put the first tax on the colonists. This was the Stamp Act, it required colonists to pay taxes on certain items such as newspapers, legal documents, licenses, and even playing cards.
“The history of present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations [unlawful seizures], all having in direct object the establishments of an absolute Tyranny over these States. ”(Document E). The British taxed just about anything they could; like tea, paper, legal documents, and stamps “Committees are appointed into the characters and conduct of every tradesman, to prevent them selling tea or buying British manufactures. ”(Document I) The British were taxing the American colonists to pay what Britain lost in the French and Indian war.
The colonists wanted representation when it came down to being taxed, but the British government would not allow it. The government wanted full control over the people, so they made sets of acts and laws that were placed on taxation. For example, the Stamp Acts of 1765. These acts taxed all papers, pamphlets, newspapers, and cards. The Townshend Acts of 1767 were also a large part of taxation.
The French and Indian War left England with a debt of £130,000,000. To help pay off the debt Britain set up taxes, to collect money, on frequently used products by the colonists. The Molasses Act put a six pence tax on every gallon of molasses. The colonists thought this was a lot of money to pay so they did everything to avoid it. This act was not really enforced and the colonists did not really obey this act.
Is a country of justice truly a lawful place if the government is rebelled against? Perhaps it could be, in certain contexts. Daniel Shays’ rebellion against the American government justifies this statement. Revolutionary War hero Daniel Shays was only doing what was right for him and his fellow debt-ridden neighbors, friends, farmers, and war heroes as he started his rebellion. Many people had been in great debt after the war, especially farmers across the U.S. that didn’t get paid for their service.
In this unit, we had learned about the American Revolution. Some of the major topics we covered were the role of women, the role of slaves, the role of Native Americans, the roles of France, the life as a soldier and some of the major battles. The woman often held and engaged in boycotts, they were cooks/nurses in the army, some were spies and one woman named Deborah Sampson dressed up as a man to help fight in the army. The slaves ran away from their colonial masters to join as a Britain soldier because if they did they were promised freedom after the war. The free Africans had tried to promote that colored people should be freed by joining the colonist's side.
This is because as soon as the war was over, Britain was left with a large debt. The British thought it was only appropriate to have the colonies help pay. As a result, the British imposed taxes. The colonies were just beginning to find a slight freedom in their ruling and felt as though they were equal to Britain. These taxes imposed a monarchical tyranny and created a segregation.
