In the article “Die Trying”, Katie J.M. Baker points out the difficulties of being a rape victim in Alabama and nationwide. The article “Die Trying” talks about a student named Megan Rondini who attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa who accused T.J. Bunn Jr. of rape. The events that led to sexual assault happened in July 1, 2015 at night where Megan Rondini went to Innisfree Irish Pub with a couple of her sorority sisters and drank five cups of beer. After drinking the beer Megan Rondini blacked out and found herself in T.J. Bunn’s car with his friend going back to his house.
A moral that is common to both To Kill a Mockingbird and an article titled “ Outrage Over 6 Month Sentence for Brock Turner Rape Case”, is that favoring a certain race or social class causes society to degress rather than progress. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the Ewells had accused a man named Tom Robinson of rape and they already acted like they’ve won the case because “ ‘ when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins. ’”(295), they knew that whatever they accused Tom of they could’ve gotten away with it as a result of the color of their skin. More importantly, there wasn’t really a case to begin with as “ Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.” (323), the result was already decided before the case got to court.

Furthermore, the young man attended Stanford University and participated in his college swim team dreamt of partaking in the Olympus. The victim heartfelt statement during the trial is disregarded because he comes from a class of privilege and is a man. Not to mention, Brock Turner’s father wrote a letter to expressing the universalizability to court saying, “my son’s life shouldn’t be ruined over 20 minutes of action (Dreher,Rod).” Therefore, Aaron Persky who is a California judge implemented an ethical decision that contemplated the clarity around both the specific choice and decision then declared a six months sentenced ruling.
To better understand campus crime, one needs to realize that it involves several contexts—the legal, the social, and the security—and that each context is interrelated with the others (Fisher & Sloan, 2007). The legal context involves judicial and legislative efforts to address campus crime, including institutional liability for on-campus victimizations and Congressional and state legislative efforts to address the problem. The social context involves efforts to develop more accurate measures of the extent and nature of campus crime, identify its major correlates, and understand better its temporal and spatial distribution. Finally, the security context involves not only law enforcement and security efforts to reduce or prevent crime on campus,

A book that I recently read that showed a reflection of my self-understanding was Missoula by Jon Krakauer because it extended my perspective on women’s safety on college campuses. The book Missoula shares stories of five women who were sexually assaulted at the University of Montana, Missoula and follows their cases all the way to trial. As a girl who has always been told that a college education is necessary to succeed in life, the idea that colleges arent safe for me felt like a secret that I wasnt allowed to know until I experienced it for myself. Reading the statistics and seeing how all of the rapists walked away unpunished strengthened my understanding of the fact that sexual assault is a normal occurance on college campuses.
The Brock Turner case is a very controversial case that spark debate on the subject of white male privilege and the abuse of power. People speculate that the only reason Turner received such a minimal sentence is because his parents are affluent and influential, due to their success and status as a white professional. He was found guilty and the judge gave him a very lenient sentence. Many people saw this as unfair to the girl that was raped and to everyone else impacted by this man 's crime. The judge 's name is Aaron Persky.
Colleges are protecting their public record and do not wish to affect their brand be publicly admitting the high rates of sexual assaults. The documentary focused on a student attending Harvard Law School and the administrators insisted that the female victim should remain silent and avoid spreading the incident around. They asked questions such as, "Did you give him the wrong message, why did you choose not to fight back". Victim blaming is presented when the administrators are more interested in what the victim did wrong rather than what the offender's actions
The documentary called The Hunting Grounds, had multiple concepts that relate to sociology. Using a sociological perspective, it was very prevalent to see the ways college campuses use patriarchy and gender stratification to keep women who have been sexually assaulted on campus from disclosing information or even getting help about these issues. Through the discrimination against women at these gender institutions the women formed a Feminist movement to bring awareness and help to the victims on campuses all around the world and to stop the assaults from reoccurring. The Hunting Grounds is a documentary that reveals the untold stories of women on college campuses and how these women have fought to have their voice heard about sexual assault on campuses. Sexual assault and rape on campuses has always been a major problem for colleges all over the world yet very little has been done to protect the students.
Many can agree that racism and prejudices are the both the biggest social issues found in this country. On a daily basis adults and children are judged/discriminated against whether it be it be in school, work, or just out on the street. A form of institutionalized racism is racial profiling. There are so many cases and statistics that show how mainly African Americans and Latinos are the ones who are victimized by being racially profiled. The ones who mainly carry out these profilings are law enforcement officers.
Although the actions of the students of the Sayreville hazing incident suggests that they thought and acted as adults, this incident of their high school careers should not be used to ruin their future in colleges and life. As most of the students who were involved in the hazing were minors, they could be tried in a juvenile court and have their records closed. According to the New York Times ‘s article on the matter, it stated “A conviction in adult court results in a criminal record, and generally, longer prison terms” (DOYNE). If the students were tried as adults, they could be faced with longer prison sentences and have a criminal record. But whether they are tried as adults or juveniles, teenagers convicted of sex crimes are required to register as sex offenders for at least 15 years (Michon).
In society and college campuses, sexual assault occurs quite frequently. According to an estimation one third of women experience a forced sexual experience at least once in their life and most of the time it occurs in colleges. Men have also been reported to be victim of sexual assaults mostly by other men. Most of the time the sexual assault is planned and perpetrated by a third person, who is known to the victim of incident. Drug and alcohol use play role in this issue and contribute to the problem as most of the time the victim and perpetrators are under the effect of alcohol or any other drug during the incident.
“The law has improved campuses' discussions of safety, several college police chiefs say, leading to bigger security budgets and more education programs.” (Lipka). “Another common mistake is conflating violations of state law and institutional policy on alcohol and weapons. If an incident is both a campus offense and a crime, it should be counted only as the latter.” (Lipka).
One predictor of sexual assault among college students is alcohol use by victims. I definitely agree with this predictor. I think there is a lot of pressure put on college students to go out and get really drunk with all of your friends. Drinking can turn into a competition which can lead to heavily intoxicated men and women. When a person is heavily intoxicated, they have no idea what is going on around them.
Binge drinking involves drinking at a very fast rate in order to get drunk which clearly can be incredibly dangerous, especially for inexperienced drinkers. Carleton relies on personal responsibility heavily but also provides many regulations meant to keep students safe. It has also been shown that alcohol is a leading cause of sexual assaults on college campuses. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “researchers consistently have found that approximately one-half of all sexual assaults are committed by men who have been drinking alcohol” and “approximately one-half of all sexual assault victims report that they were drinking alcohol at the time of the assault.” Alcohol and sexual assault are clearly connected so having an open policy can also lead to an increase in sexual assault cases on campus.
