While I was observing the students in the Mr. Kastles classroom, I noticed that some of the girls were playing with their hair, messing with their nails or biting their nails. Some of the students were putting their hands on their head and face; crossing their legs, playing with the pages of the book or playing with their pencils. There were a few students that had their eyes closed and rubbing them. Most of the students were doing the same thing. But very few were different.
At Frist Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown I learned while observing and interacting how some of the different set up of areas impacted a student’s learning and space. Some of the areas were used for quiet time, noisier activities, and more active learning. A typical class room layout is rows of desks and chairs facing the front, it is the usual expected layout for learners and encourages them to accept conformity, something as simple as sitting on the chairs facing the front of the classroom is reassuring to the majority that the class is safe. I started doing my field Experience in Lime Kiln Elementary school where I shadowed Mr. Mikalov, a fifth grade teacher, When I first walked into his classroom it was so colorful and full of artworks, student works and inspirational quotes I felt happy walking into his classroom so I would imagine what a fifth grader would feel like. Mr.Mikalov was very generous in showing me around the classroom where they have their group work, reading area on the rug. He showed me the schedule they follow every week, they do math every day from 12:13 to 12:55 and have lunch every day at 11:26- 12:08 and off course I took a picture of it to know when and what they are doing that time. One day, Mrs. Lauren sat on the rug during sensory play and two of the children wanted to sit in her lap while the other children wanted to play. Sometimes the children seem to get out of control.
