When the typical American person thinks of the word “Bubbler” most do not think of a drinking fountain with water in it. Usually the term “Bubbler” has a negative meaning to it in a sense. The word “Bubbler” at first had only one meaning, today it can mean almost the opposite of what you would expect in some regions of America. To New Englanders and in the midwest it has come to mean a water fountain, but to a few other states it means a glass pipe you smoke out of. The word bubbler is a moderate term used in other parts of America, and it appears to be used least in the south.When I went to North Carolina for a week and I asked where the water bubbler was and they all looked at me like I was crazy. I told them it is a water fountain and they all laugh and asked why I did not just say they to begin with. The word in New England is used so much one unconsciously says it. Many people in the south view the turn of phrase as weird or silly. They say phrases like “I am getting water” or even “Water fountain”.
