Cyber Bullying and Respect
I. Introduction
Just like any social interaction, there are ways to use the internet for good, and ways to use it for ill. The internet has opened up new horizons for people to explore, and new places for people to gather and engage with each other. It's easy sometimes to think that we are different people when we are online, and that we can behave in different ways than we would in the real world. Young people across the globe particularly in many modernized society are confronted with a new challenge, one that many parents, educators and policy makers often have great difficulty to understand. Like a form of currency, we feel entitled to it for ourselves and others, but can earn or lose it by our actions. Yet even the most morally bankrupt of us have an innate dignity as human beings that can never be lost. Respect, then, is a starting point for all our relationships. All of us want to be respected. Even in gangs people who feel they are being ‘disused’ will often react violently. At school, teachers who don’t pay students proper respect stir up great anger. Everybody wants to be respected. We all want to be respected. But respect can mean many different things to us. Some associate it with bullies who teach respect with their fists. Others associate it with being stiff and polite in ways that don't come naturally to us. In this exploration we look at the kind of respect that is important in all our relationships, and how we can respect others in natural ways. Respect can seem artificial.
