American actress Estelle Parsons once said, “It is so important to get respect for what you do and at the same time give it;” respect is also one of the twelve virtues of the Lakota Nation. Respect is one of the revered and more important values that Native Americans still live by today. Because they hold a significant place in Lakota society, special respect is to be given to elders. Both children and adults must give respect to others to be able to receive respect. When you show respect, it shows that you were raised properly. Showing respect is an undoubtedly basic law of life. In the beginning of the story, Coyote saw that Buffalo Bull had died and decided to play with his skull. Coyote attempted to be on Buffalo Bull’s favorable side throughout the story, but in the end, he disrespected him. Coyote was given a calf and was supposed to be able to live off of it for the rest of his life, but Coyote did not respect Buffalo Bull enough. Coyote ended up killing and eating the calf that was given to him and tried to obtain another, but was denied.
