Certain types of Cyber Bullying may violate school codes or be against anti-discrimination laws or sexual harassment laws. These violations can warrant a misdemeanor Cyber-harassment charge or charge of juvenile delinquency. It can also result in loss of internet service provider or instant message account privileges by going against their “terms of service”. If Cyber Bullying is done by someone “hacking” your account, it is considered identity theft which could result in serious criminal charges. Further, if the bullying involves sexting or forwarding sexual messages and pictures, it is considered child pornography and even a juvenile would be placed on the sex offender’s list. It simply is not worth the risk!

• Don’t blame yourself! The bully has the problem – not you! A bully is usually a frustrated, unhappy person who wants to have control over your feelings so you feel as badly as they do!
• Don’t dwell on it! Save or print it as evidence in case it’s needed and put it aside! Dwelling on it will make you feel worse and then the bully has won. Focus on the positives about yourself!
• Don’t respond! Responding to a bully’s nasty messages will only fuel his/her fire causing them to attack you even more.
• Find support from those who don’t cyber bully. Find others with your same values and interests. Talk to a parent, counselor, teacher or coach about it.
There are a few steps you can take to avoid being a victim of Cyber Bullying.

• Protect your passwords. Don’t share them with anyone – even your closest friends. If you feel like someone has obtained any of your passwords, change them immediately.
