In the event “Beyond Burkas and Bombers: Anti-Muslim Sentiment in America”: Film Screening & Discussion”, the film discussed the thoughts and misunderstanding that Americans may have about Muslims and why this may be happening. The film states how Islam is much more than an Asian religion. There is so much to the religion; more than the media will present it. The film discusses how 1/3 of Americans have hostility towards Muslims and this occurs because they use it as a scapegoat. The presentation of Muslims in the media creates this misunderstanding and negativity because journalism cannot capture the broader, deeper idea behind Islam. The film follows this boy and girl who fell in love, even though the boy wasn’t originally Muslim. The study showed that they mutually influenced and reinforced each other over time (Eyseel, Geschke, & Frindte, 2015). What this means is that those who showed a preference for private TV channels were more likely to show signs of Islamophobia and those who showed signs of Islamophobia were more likely to pick private TV channels. The study related to the event because they both discuss the role of media in Islamophobia and the presentation of Muslims and Islam. The article made me realize how over time, the media can lead to a strong influence on a person, that may not always be for the better. Seeing this article made me understand more of the topics that were discussed in the film. I realized how one of the major things that are causing this hostility and divide is the way humans will see things and the media is like a double-edged sword.
