Housing When it comes to deciding where to live, housing is an important consideration. Page 122 to 126 explains the elements of Ecotopian shelter. One element that sets Ecotopia apart from Canada is standardized housing. There are standard house architecture in Canada but Ecotopia produces houses literally in factories. Ecotopian call these dwellings “extruder homes” because they are made by extruding plant based plastic to form an entire room. They have a great feature of being portable. Most Ecotopians would choose a wooden cabin over extruder home, but extruder homes are a lot cheaper and easier to build or repair. In Ecotopia it is the workers that are in control of the means of production. Pages 89-94 explains why Ecotopia doesn’t identify as a “socialist” country, there is still private enterprise, but regulation is put into place to make them environmentally sound and to give ownership to everyone. Ecotopia mixes the ideas of free market competition and communist collectivism. Business in Ecotopia is structured in such a way to encompass the philosophies of Karl Marx worker control and Adam Smith’s ideas of competition. Anyone who gets hired by a company has to by law recieve equal ownership. It means that most corporations never have more than 300 workers. There is no individual income tax, the method of taxation by partnership basis. Corporations are taxed based on gross income. Everyone in any company gets their “fair share” of profits and taxation. That tax revenue is also used to fund the program that provides everyone with minimum levels of food, healthcare and housing. It is comforting that no matter what role one has in the company it would have the same authority or voting power as that of a manager. It is unnerving that no matter how much one contributes to the company he/she would still have to share ownership or even the same salary as the person who doesn’t give much value. Canada in the other hand is a mixed economy like Ecotopia but it allows for entrepreneurs to hire people and negotiate salary without having to give up ownership. There is this freedom and meritocracy for individuals in Canada. Businesses can grow as large as consumers will allow it. Anyone with some regulation can start a business in Canada and run it as they please. Ordinary people can invests in enterprises they support, essentially becoming owners with their hard earned money as supposed to becoming one just by being hired.
