As Americans, overproduction and over-consumption are just ways of life. People head out daily and buy and buy until they have "overbought". A "Buy Nothing Day" would be valuable in America because it would raise awareness of over-consumption, explain how marketing tricks people to overbuy, and show people how to buy for their precise needs.
Consumers are the most crucial point in any developed economy, and it is them who determine the production rate. If a "Buy Nothing Day" was put into action, it could also be a day of learning. The reason most problems go unsolved is because no one knows they exist. If someone would raise awareness on the topic of over-consumption, people would be more likely to make concious decision about their purchases, and in turn, begin to end this crisis.
Instead of letting consumers drive the economy, companies found a way to influence all consumer decisions, marketing. Companies use tactics like: "Buy 2 get 1 FREE!" and "50% off when you buy 3 or more!" to

People do not need 12 cans of soup for one week, but most people who make those purchases do not take time and think through a purchase, those people are called "Impulse Buyers". People who buy on impulse, on that split-second decision are a major source of buying without thought, and are a cause of this overproduction crisis. With "Buy Nothing Day" those impulse buyers would have an entire day to think about their purchases and it might even change their ways.
"Buy Nothing Day" would prove useful in the United States because it would be used to raise awareness of over-consumption, explain how marketing tricks people to overbuy, and show people how to buy for their precise needs. A day of no buying would stop the impulse buyers from buying and buying. It would show how marketing exploits people. Finally it would reverse these bad habits, and maybe even Make America Great
