In “A Revolutionary People at War”, Charles Royster has developed a complex and in-depth thesis regarding the American Revolution. As a graduate student at Capella, I chose to obtain a Masters in Psychology. This field was selected because I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and I felt it was best to get a well-rounded education. I do not have an interest in becoming licensed and entering the therapy realm, as I highly enjoy the case management side of things. My passion has always been working in the child protective services field.
I have always had a passion for children, particularly children who have experienced trauma. I am fascinated with psychology and how the brain develops and organizes information. 1) I became interested in social work after working in a residential treatment facility and witnessing the impact the “system” has on children. I have worked with children who were institutionalized at a young age. They had had several placements ranging from foster homes, group homes, lock down facilities etc., revolving social workers, and broken trust in adults. While working with these children, providing one-on-one care and building rapport, I began to notice the gaps in the system and how they affected these children. With the work I have done providing services to individuals from infancy to adulthood, I have seen the effects of trauma on their life trajectory, if not properly supported.
I began college as a freshman at Central Michigan University thinking I was going to become an elementary teacher. I knew I wanted to make an impact on peoples lives but after my first week of classes, I remember telling myself becoming a teacher is not how I wanted to do it. I went to my counselor and added a social work course to my schedule. I had finally found courses I enjoyed taking and academically excelled in. Which brings me to where I am now, pursuing my degree in social work.

If I wanted to live up to the example my parents set and love what I do, I had to be honest with myself and pursue what it is I felt I was meant to do.
