California Law SB54 causes a moral predicament in California as it severely limits law enforcement and jailer cooperation with I.C.E. The Orange County Board of Supervisors has voted to join the Federal Government's lawsuit against California over this issue. The passage of this law creates an ethical dilemma in California furthermore, it forms one between California and the Federal Government.

The Federal Government is cracking down on illegal immigration in this country and California stepped to the forefront of this issue by passing California “Sanctuary State” Law SB54 therefore, it puts California, California Counties and cities at odds with the Federal Government. (Ulloa, 2017) California is made up of over 2.3 million illegal immigrants and this law is designed to protect them. California feels that all citizens have the right to be here regardless of their immigration status and irrespective of if they follow California’s laws or break them. The Governor Jerry Brown “took the unusual step of writing a signing message in support of SB 54. He called the legislation a balanced measure that would allow police and sheriff's agencies to continue targeting dangerous criminals, while protecting hardworking families without legal residency in the country”. (Ulloa, 2017) But Governor Brown wrote “This bill does not prevent or prohibit Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or the Department of Homeland Security from doing their own work in any way.” (Ulloa, 2017) Some of the things that this law changes are as follows: State and Local law enforcement agencies can no longer honor hold request that would hold an offender for 48 hours longer than the conclusion of the ordered criminal custody. Law enforcement agencies cannot share personnel information that is not public existing. Law Enforcement agencies can’t utilize immigration agents as interpreters. If we were to use Kantian ethics to solve this issue, it would require both sides to sit down and determine what is morally right for both the Citizens in California and the illegal immigrants. The United States was founded on a believe that there were certain unalienable rights life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Immigrants come to the United States for many reasons such as to escape oppressive governments and poor economies. The ones that enter the Country illegally are breaking the law and as such should be returned to their country of origin and follow the proper process to enter the United States legally. But that is where the moral issue comes into play. Just because they are here illegally, are they law abiding citizens that give back to society or are they committing violent crimes or selling drugs. The way to solve this issue would be to come to an agreement that would protect those illegal immigrants’ that are contributing from being deported and provide them with a clear well-defined path to citizenship. This would meet the intent of the Federal Government's requirements to protect its citizens and protect the struggling families of America.
