Many decisions that we make for our lives that will affect our future are determined by variables that we experience. In both of the selections, “The Explosion” and “Call Me Maria,” the protagonists are impacted by many factors. Some of those factors include family, environment, and values. In the story, “The Explosion” it talks about a boy living in a poor, boring town with a big dream of building a rocket. The boy, Homer Junior, lives in a town called Coalwood; the town is known for their huge coal mining industry. When at one point Homer tries to build a rocket but completely fails, he has to make a decision of what he really wants to do with his life. The were very spread physically, because Maria and her father lived in New York, while her mother still lived in their home country, Puerto Rico. They were also mentally spread out because Maria and her father really wanted her mother to come to New York. Both of them wanted to be a joined family again, but Maria’s mother had different plans. She brought her new and secret fiance to New York to tell Maria and her dad that she was going to be getting a divorce with him. She also told them that she was staying in Puerto Rico. Lastly, she surprised them by saying she was marrying her fiance so he could become her new husband. Third, Maria’s family was emotionally spread apart because right when Maria and her father heard about how she wasn't staying in New York and she was getting a divorce with her husband, who is Maria’s father, they were automatically heartbroken. Maria and her father were so sad that weren't going to be a united family again. But, Maria’s mother was ecstatic. She was so happy that she was getting married to the man she loved, even though she cheated on her real husband. Maria was put in an uncomfortable situation and had to decide if she wanted to go and be with her mom or her dad. Maria's family influenced her decision on who she could go to live with; she could either stay with her pitiful father and comfort him, or she could go with her cheerful mom and her new husband, which is the man she used to cheat on Maria’s dad. Text evidence can be found on pages 29 and 30. In the story, “The Explosion” the protagonist’s family was so much different. Homer’s family was very close to each other. They told each other everything how it should be told, no matter if it was rude or not.
